Hi,

My wife has had Crohn's for the past 20 yrs, she recently started back to work after being out for several months due to compliations from her Crohn's ( she works as a R.N.). During the first couple weeks back a few co-workers took a disliking to her for some reason or another. Recently a Dr. that she works with and respects her as a R.N. in the nursing field told her that the two co-workers were spreading rumors about her being a substance abuser. My wife came home very up set to say the least, she filed a complaint with her Human Resource dept. The H.R. dept. had a meeting with these co-workers and gave them a warning and they will have to attend classes. What are anyones thought on what should have been done with these so called professional co-workers?? P.S. My wife dose take alot of medications for her illness/disease and thinks that one of them may have went through her bag left in her locker( she takes only prescribed meds and nothing else). I think that getting written up and taking a class was way to lenient, they should have been terminated. Any thoughts ?? My wife already feels bad that she has to take meds to live a semi-normal life..

Hi ridethetrain,

I think your wife handled this the right way by reporting the issue to HR. HR probably had to consider many different things when determining the appropriate punishment, including the track record of the employees in question.

Hopefully this was a big enough scare to the other nurses that they will not cause anymore trouble. Your wife should not be afraid to report any other issues that come up with the two other nurses, however I think going forward she should just go about her business in performing her job. She should try to remain professional with the other nurses to not cause them any reason to act inappropriately again. This is especially important if your wife needs ends up making a further complaint with HR.

It is unfortunate for this to happen but you and your wife both know the truth of the situation and should not let bullies influence your thoughts or feelings. I hope this is the last time your wife needs to deal with such a situation as it is totally unfair and unwarranted.

Wow to get treated like this from nurses of all people!? Those people are lower than low, they out of anyone should know what this disease does to people and the numerous amounts of pills that are required on a daily basis. I am sorry she had to go through this like Mikey says she handled it the best way, don't confront them just act like nothing happened and move on. It's a shame the doctor didn't tell the other nurses to stop, whats with that?

Thanks for the support, I know the struggle she goes thru on a daily basis not including the other daily life thing we all have to deal with :)

I have had a very similar experience as a solicitor. I went to occupational health who told me I had DDA protection. Luckily my employers have been very supportive. If anything else happens feel free to message me. I have only very recently joined this site due in part to meeting a very supportive girlfriend having previously struggled on for 10 years with no support.
