I know we're forever trying to figure out why we're all cursed w/IBD.

I read on another thread that a few people had chronic ear infections as children. I had over 50 before I was 2yo.

My question to you: How many of you had chronic ear infections as children?

I had several. Infections of various kinds but i still remember the pain of ear infections.

The home remedy was my father blowing cigarette smoke into my ear with a straw.

It seemed to help although I do not really remember it all that well.

Cigarette smoke?? Really?! Wow, I've never heard of that... but hey, whatever works!
I had to get tubes put in both of my ears. I had hearing loss, so I mispronounced words a lot (which my mother thought was just adorable!), and I still have equilibrium problems (I'm 28 now).

I had tons and continue to get them still .. I don't know how many but I have blown my ear drum at least once.

Same here. They'd roll a paper into a cone, stick it in my ear, blow smoke and ah, instant relief.

wow - i've never heard of the smoke thing either!

i don't think i got childhood ear infections, but i do now :( and not just infections, i get inexplicable pain, and occasional hearing loss too. maybe it's just old age heh..

I suspect the smoke trick works because inhaled smoke constricts blood vessels, so it would seem possible that smoke in the ear would do the same. Just a guess though. Sort of like if you have a headache and you rub your head you're compressing things which make it feel better?

Sometimes I'd feel a "pop", so it definitely helped relieve the pressure. There's not a lot of old-school remedies I'm in to, but that one always worked well with me.

It is as good an explanation as I have heard.

I never had a clue as to why it would work to blow smoke in the ear.

The ironic part is that second hand cigarette smoke probably contributes to getting an ear infection.

I had lots of ear infections as kid. I still do with lots of ear pain and I'm definitely not a kid anymore!

I have had a ton of ear infections and continue to have issues with them. I have had tubes in my ears 6 or 8 times in my life. I had titanium tubes put in my ears and developed an infection and had to have then removed. My "Onset" Of crohns appeared two days after i had these removed and ended with my first hospitalization (have had 5 since March). I had a family member claim that there was a connection between the crohns and the tubes but have found nothing.

I have had ears infections my whole life. i have had tubes placed in my ears 6 times total.

I've never had tubes .. I also get what the doctors call "swimmers ear" which is odd since I don't swim .. since well I don't know how to swim haha. Somehow I get fluid build up. Usually just treat it with some antibiotics and I'm good to go. I did get one really really bad infection about 2003 where it the fluid and my lymph node (says the doctor) draining down the side of my face (internally) and down into my mouth (I didn't taste it) but man that hurt like a SOB, I couldn't hardly move my jaw.

OO! OOO! I had TMJ, I had surgery on one side for it. Man, if THAT didn't suck! I don't get ear infections though. Is there a connection?

Same here dude, i was on anti biotics like my whole life, But my little story of how i got crohns (i think) Is that i just got a small stomach virus, pooping a little bit and throwing up, but then i was feeling better and then what do you know i got a staph infection! (ive had like 2 or 3 in the past) so they put me on anti biotics and then the stomach pain the pooping and vomiting got so bad i couldnt even move or eat, i lost like 20 pounds in 2 weeks..... And then i went to the doc and was diagnosed with crohns disease
