Hey,

Does anyone here know what an "empty descending colon" is and if you've ever been told you have it?

Is it as obvious as it sounds and is it something simple like, there is just no poop there, or can it mean there is no poop is there because further along the bowel there might be a problem/blockage...?

Thanks everyone

you need to ask in what context they are referring to; obstruction before the area, simply empty of stool at that time, or without proper blood circulation or intestinal villi. all of which are common in crohns

Thank you so much! At least I can have some idea of what it can mean.

The doc referred to me as having an empty descending colon and requiring an urgent colonoscopy for investigation. Fingers crossed its not too, too serious.

Thanks again

Weirdness Binxy. This is where most of my disease is and where my resection was. The only thing I can think of is that you just don't have any stool hanging out in there at present. I mean - you are still having bowel movements right? So stuff is passing through. I'd just ask and see what the heck that meant. Hope everything is ok - let us know how the scope goes!

I was told that I had an empty descending colon and "the absence of bowel sounds" during one of my exams. I had a colonoscopy right after that because they feared a perforation somewhere in the ascending colon and that feces was leaking into my system. The colonoscopy only showed active crohns, nothing more. I hope yours shows nothing at all! :)

Sooo, turns out I had some scar tissue getting in the way.
But, big "BUT" there was no inflammation or ulcers clear all the way except for the acr tissue... the nurse even said to me that I had IBS... I was like WTF!? I had biopsies done 4 months ago with positive Crohn's. Clearly the nurse shouldn't be telling me things like that.

So I guess I must be in some kind of remission, right..?

Also, I was told my large bowel was actually quite long, longer than normal. What an achievement

I am now more confused than when I went in. :confused2: Cannot wait for the docs appointment to have a chat about all this. :duh:

Well - you don't get scar tissue from IBS my dear!!!! Wow - a longer than normal bowel...wish *I* had that :O) More to hang onto LOL!! VERY good news that there is no activity - maybe they can do a dilation on the scar tissue if that is what is causing your problems currently. Let us know what the doc says!!

Empty decending colon

If the GI felt it was urgent I assume you have been having some mid abdominal cramping indicatiove of perhaps a blockage in the small/large bowel connection...normally called crohns.... was the colonoscopy performed as an emergency?

the last two thirds of my large intestine are scarred from old and new flares, the only 'healthy' bit left is just coming out of the small into the large bowel,
and my consultant said when i am having a flare up my stool kinda sticks to the healthy bowel cos it doesnt want to move into the scarred bit....which would leave it empty...until there is too much stool of course and it just gets forced through.....dont know if thats kinda what your describing or not?
nonetheless, would be interesting to hear what your doc explains it as.....ooh and yay for your extra long bowel....:)
