I pick up the phone early this morning to postpone a scheduled appointment with my GI and refill a prescription for Bentyl. The nurse calls back to say that while I am able to reschedule it would be with a different doctor because the one I'm used to seeing is retiring today. This is some shocking news for someone who's waited over 10 years for a diagnosis and a patient of another GI who past away a year ago.
The nurse then proceeds to tell me that because Bentyl was prescribed at the hospital I would need to contact my primary care physician to request a refill or a new prescription. Haven't had time to process the devastating news well enough but acknowledged the urgency of choosing a new specialist and began to call the other clinic. Left a message with the secretary seeking other GI options there and the possibilities of refilling the prescription without an appointment. The nurse returns my call two hours later to tell me that my generalist has resigned and while I have no primary care at this moment there will be no replacement; that I am to choose from the many options available in that clinic and contact my insurance. Needless to say, today is the 1st of the month; usually on HMO physician changes are not effective until the following month and so any services except ER visits will be at my expense.
Okay, breathing-in all of this right now... at this point all I can think is that I am clearly bad luck for the medical industry. It can't just be pure coincidence.
