Hi I am new here. I am 35 yo and have had crohn's
for 20 years. My crohn's has always stayed in the same
spot and now I am so malnourished they want to take
the piece out with all the scar tissue and do a small bowel
resection. I have never had any surgeries and am scared out
of my mind. I wonder what experiences others have had with
this. I am in the hospital now trying to get nourishment. I also
have a lot of swelling which they say is due to low albumin
from not absorbing protein. Also wonder if anyone has had that.
Thanks for the help,
Bri

Welcome bdh,
I am sorry to hear that you are in the hospital and feeling so ill. I do not have experience with your issues, so I cannot offer any advice. I hope that you are soon feeling better.

Welcome Bri,
Haven't had your experience but please know that I'm hoping for the best for you! Keep us posted! Good luck and hang in there! Jan

Hi Bri and welcome to the forum! I have not had Crohn's related surgery yet, but I have had MANY surgeries in my lifetime without any problems. Honestly, you'll wake in recovery and be like, "It's over already?"

Try to focus on the positives and how this surgery can greatly improve your health! So many on the forum have had surgery and felt great because of it; I hope some pop in your thread here and share. Try not to worry so much and I wish you lots of luck!

Hey Bri, Im 18 and have only had crohn's for 3 year, but i've had a keyhole surgery and a major surgery when they had to take out about 10 inches of bowel in october. I understand how absolutely terrifying it is and i won't try and tell you you shouldn't be scared because i'm always terrified, everybody would be. I've always found that the doctor's are extremely professional and everytime ive had to have surgery they have been so amazing! Pain is no issue as you will always be well anesthetized and they are so understanding throughout the whole procedure! They told me i could wake up with a Colostomy bag and i was absolutely terrified, but they always warn me about anything that can happen, so don't panic about any unexpected surprises :) You don't even tend to know anything about it as you get knocked out before and you wake up after high as a kite and not knowing a thing about it :D best of luck, im sure it will all go extremely smoothly! keep us updated x

Hi Bri and welcome!

Resections are very common for Crohns - but that doesn't make them any less scary! But as you poke around the forum and read about other people's surgeries - resections, colectomies, ostomy placements - a common thread you will find is that when it is all over, most people are very, very happy they did it and get significant relief from their symptoms. It's a couple months of recovery and then a much improved life!

Good luck - hope all goes well! - Amy

Hi Bri,
Last June I was going through what you are. My legs and feet were so swollen I could barely move them. I was also told it was from lack of protien. I was on a picc line for a week and received albumin and a few bags of blood prior to the resection surgery. The surgery itself was over in an eyeblink - then it was recovery. Which isn't fun, but boy is it worth it. The swelling for me did not go all the way away for a couple weeks after the surgery. I used compression socks to help with the swelling too.
Good luck on your surgery. If you want to chat send me a pm. :)

Don't be worried about surgery, you will go to sleep then wake up when its done. I had it done in my ear, that was scary.
I learned something new about not absorbing protein. thanks! I had low preotein but i don't know how much if any swollen I was in.

Bri,
I had surgery removing a partial blockage and they fixed a fistula. It is scary but you will feel so much better after words! Your body will start absorbing the vitamins and stuff you need naturally. Just be careful and don't go crazy with eating like I did. I gained 50 pounds pretty fast but it was worth getting to eat all the good stuff :)

Can understand your fear, but know there are good medications to control the pain and know that it will get you back on the road to recovery and feeling better. I have had 8 abd surgeries. Healing takes time, but keep a positive attitude, it WILL help. Honestly I am now in the best shape of my life, would not change a thing.
