I am about to have surgery on friday.i have colostomy now, and have very bad proplems with chronic wounds all over it and three fistulas around my stoma. I also have hernia mesh around my stoma. Now they are moving my stoma to right hand side and remove my colon and make ileostomy instead.

I have few questions. I am terrified that my new stona would be flush with the skin. I have had two colostomys and both of then were flush and this one is sunk below skin line. I have roundish belly and i am over weight. Is there anyone with spouty ileostomy AND big belly?! Or is is something that's imbossible?

Second question is that is there anyobe who has had colostomy and tyen ileostomy? Was it hard to adjust? Which one you like better?

Super nervous...

I'm very skinny, but my first ileostomy stoma was flush/retracted. As long as I used a convex bag it was no problem. Mouldable rings can apparently help prevent leaks with flush or retracted stomas too, but they never helped me, a convex bag seemed to be what I needed. I'm now on my third ileostomy stoma, and it goes from completely retracted to enormously prolapsed multiple times a day (my second one did too, but never this much). I have another health condition that makes me prone to prolapses, hernias, retraction, etc. of all kinds. But I'm very happy with my current stoma despite its changing sizes and positions, as with my previous two, as long as I use a convex bag, no problem. Is it leaking you're worried about, or something else?

I've never had a colostomy, but, as you probably already know, ileostomies typically need emptying more frequently, output is more liquid, and you may have to avoid or limit certain foods to avoid blockages with an ileostomy.

Surgery went well! I just got to go home yesterday. My stoma did died at the surgery table so thwy had to eemove few cm my intestkne and create a new stoma, less spouyty one :/ but no leaks with soft convex pelican bag so i am ok.

They did close my colostomy and stitch that wound close and remove my colon and made ileostomy. Stoma started working right aeay at the revoveryroom and haven't stop since. Not very high output, i empty about 5 times a day. Mayby once in a night but not every night. Lasti night i slept from 23pm to 9.30am without mtying. Bag was full though... i don't eat that much yet so that can change too.

I had epidural 3 days and after that i just take paracetamol 3-4g a day. Wasn't in pain at the hospital but here home i am! Here i move a lot more so that's propaply the reason.pain is around my stoma and its swollen too. Wounds aren't that painful ecxept now those stitches is nipping and oulling so it is annoying. How long does this pain last? I just can't remember, even though i have had 3 stoma surgerys before :D

great news, hoping youl have a far better lifestyle now, i had a few stitches taken out from the stoma a few days after the op as they were pulling, no leaks sounds great too, keep taking the painkillers

I've always found pain gets worse a few days after surgery. I think it's because the anaesthetic wears off. But if it's been more than a few days, check with a doctor. Recovery should be pretty linear after that, with pain gradually decreasing. Avoid bending and lifting though!
