Hey, today I was prescribed Cipro "XL" (500mg) for my abscess but was only given a prescription for Fucidin cream and told you use it 3x a day. Me being cautious with new medicine don't know how I feel about putting cream on an open abscess. Now this is going to sound gross, but these aren't your typical abscess the size of a dime and drained through a poke. The incision is still about 7" long and it has never closed. It is still almost a fingers width like a ditch.

Personally I feel like constantly touching it to be cream on it would just create infection/irritation.

Has anyone ever been prescribed this cream for an abscess?

Oh poor you, that sounds awful. I wonder if you could start by putting the cream on some gauze and/or a dressing and applying it til hopefully things have healed up a bit?

yeah I thought about that as well. This is going to end up a mess. It's already draining (a lot sometimes) and now if I have to put cream on it, there's going to be such a mess down there.

Hi Kwalker
I have never heard of that, I do use calmoseptine creme with my fistula and have not had any issues. My surgeon made it sound like as long as you are draining it will flush anything like that out without worrying about infection. I may have missunderstood, maybe you could ask the pharmacist?

Thanks Sailorluna, I'm definitely going to talk to the pharmacist before filling it. Do you find your cream even made a difference?

Hey just saw your post about fucidin... I was told it's like over the counter polysporin but much stronger. My brother has used it for his abscesses but I don't think they were as big as yours. It may help heal faster but I would ask your pharmacist to address concerns for sure. Putting it on the guaze sounds like a good idea if you do decide to give it a try.
Good luck!

Hey thanks, I actually got the prescription filled today after talking to the pharmacist and him telling me how effective it is. He said it can make the area really itchy though so we'll see. I just put it on actually. I don't like that its white because it stains more but I have to wear pads anyways so it might be okay.

It costs $60 a tube and I have 3 more refills so the whole prescription was about $240. Its a good thing my school health plan covers it or else I would NOT be paying that much for cream.

I'll let everyone know if it actually works or not. Its another one of those things that says it takes a few days in order to kick in.

Small update, I can't see this stuff being useful at all. Because its an antibiotic I was told by the pharmacist I can only use it 2x a day. So last night I took a shower before bed and put the cream on. I woke up a few hours later to go to the bathroom and with that, took every last bit of the cream off. Because of where the abscess is, every time I go to the bathroom its going to take the cream off

maybe call the pharmacist and see if you could re-apply after wiping... or maybe more times a day since you may be an exception to the 2x a day rule...

Yeah, I'm going to after it opens. I don't see how it would make a difference because I'm not swallowing anything so I don't know how you "over dose" on a cream.

Caesarea, lol where you say? It's a very small town with a corner store and a wee restaurant. It's right on lake Scugog, which is very nice!! Very happy and lucky to have stumbled upon this little gem. Do you know Port Perry? It's like 15 minutes outside of there.

Well, I've never heard of any of those places lol. It would probably be easier if I told you I'm about 10 minutes away from Niagara Falls, you know...one of the (not-so) greatest wonders of the world...atleast I think it still is but wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't. It's so much less exciting when you live here lol

Oh ok, that's not too far. I'm about an hour from Toronto..don't ask which direction lol

Fallsview Casino and I don't usually get along. They usually just take my money lol. I won 400 bucks once though. I usually just play Roulette tables.

Hi KWalker - you asked about the calmoseptine. I don't think it would help with an infection, it is helpful for soothing the skin when the drainage is irratating it, but its not an antibiotic. I hope your cream kicks in and helps, did the pharmacist say you could reapply after wiping?

Oh ok thank you. I got studying and ended up completely forgetting so I wrote it down that I have to call tomorrow morning because I have some other errands and that too
