I'm discovering that having CD means having to ask lots of embarrassing questions so...here goes....

I used to get terrible gas only after eating certain foods. By terrible, I mean that the 'odor' was unusually AWFUL and embarrassing. To be clear, I'm gassy all the time but only certain foods caused it to be so very offensive. With this most recent flare (only my 2nd flare ever), it seems that I have this horrible smelling gas no matter what I eat. Any suggestions for making this symptom less unpleasant for me and my poor family? Any natural remedies? Anyone else experience this?

Please don't feel embarrassed to ask anything here. There are certain foods known to increase gas.

"Most foods that contain carbohydrates can cause gas. In contrast, fats and proteins cause little gas. Foods that produce gas in one person may not cause gas in someone else, depending on how well individuals digest carbohydrates and the type of bacteria present in the intestines.
Some foods that may cause gas include
beans
vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, brussels sprouts, onions, mushrooms, artichokes, and asparagus
fruits such as pears, apples, and peaches
whole grains such as whole wheat and bran
sodas; fruit drinks, especially apple juice and pear juice; and other drinks that contain high-fructose corn syrup, a sweetener made from corn
milk and milk products such as cheese, ice cream, and yogurt
packaged foods—such as bread, cereal, and salad dressing—that contain small amounts of lactose, a sugar found in milk and foods made with milk
sugar-free candies and gums that contain sugar alcohols such as sorbitol, mannitol, and xylitol" http://digestive.niddk.nih.gov/ddiseases/pubs/gas/

As far as everything causing gas and horrible smells now that you are flaring, I can relate. I find when my disease is very active the odor is so foul. I think the main thing is to lessen gassy foods but also ensure your disease is being controlled.

I can totally relate -- I am also exceptionally gassy, and at times my farts can be VERY sharp. Usually after taking antibiotics, or when my CD is more active.

For me, taking a 30-day course of probiotics usually gets the smell back to a tolerable level. I don't have a specific brand that I prefer... I just look for ones that are specifically formulated for bloating, gas, or colon health -- and of those, whichever appears to have the highest overall number of organisms or the greatest diversity of organisms.

FWIW, since I started drinking kefir every day, I have had far fewer episodes of super-stinky gas. I make my own -- if you are interested, there are a number of threads in this forum related to making kefir. Ya noy usually has good advice, and I'm sure there are a number of people on the forum (myself included) who would be happy to share kefir grains with you if you want to give it a try.

I know how embarassing it feels. I used to have terrible gas back when I was drinking milk, eating cheese and etc (note that I get gas from bread too), and unfortunatelly, my sister and I share a room, so when i fart, she is choking and has to open every window which was hilarious to me.:rof:
Ofcourse, the worst part was sleepover at a friends house. :s
I would go to their bathroom and prayed to God that there is a window XD

My doc gave me hyoscyamine, sometimes it helps with gas. Avoid sugars is the only other alternative for me.

I keep saying I'm going to buy myself one of those charcoal pillows. .. .

But the smell doesnt bother me!:lol2:

I had to give up wheat and dairy and sugar. It's been five weeks now with little gas and/or bloating. No soda, nothing but water and 100 percent grape juice mixed with water. No carbs of any kind. Hard? Yeah, I had withdrawals from sugar. My hope is to control Crohns with diet. But in any case it is soooooo nice not to have that horrible gas.

Hello Mamabeck... I can understand how you feel.
Many healthy foods may cause gas, such as fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and milk products. Most people produce 1 to 3 pints of intestinal gas in their large intestines (colons) every 24 hours and pass gas an average of 14 times a day. Generally the gas is made up primarily of carbon dioxide, hydrogen, and in some families, methane, that is mixed with nitrogen and oxygen from room air that is inhaled or swallowed.
Here I am giving some of home remedies to avoid the gas in stomach. I hope it helps.

Ginger
To prevent the gas forming, always chew a fresh piece of ginger after meals else you may add ginger in your foods. Ginger tea also great helpful in preventing gas.

Garlic
By garlic soup you may get relief from gas.
For making this garlic soup take some grinded garlic and boil them in water for a few minutes after adding small amount black pepper and cumin seeds. Strain it and allow it come to room temperature. Drink this solution two to three times a day to get better results in a few days.

Cardamom
You can chew whole pods of cardamom two to three times a day to solve the problem of stomach gas. You can make a tea by steeping a few pods of cardamom along with a small slice of fresh ginger.

It’s also good to maintain a diet chart with all the details of our food intakes, drinks and exercises. I think this is a good way to identify the trigging foods.

Thanks Zophai Roberts for sharing informative information. Honestly I appreciate your efforts. I have researched in many blogs I haven’t found exact solution for gas problem. The way of explaining is easy to understand for me. One of my friends has a gas problem as you said that by consuming we can prevent gas problem I surely suggest to my friends to have ginger after the meals and also add ginger in tea. And you said about garlic soup really it helps a lot for my friend. I was worrying that my friend has gas problem many people are suggested to him consult a doctor. He extremely unlikely to go to doctor. I hope the diet and soup which suggested it helps a lot.

Hello Zophai.. thanks for providing useful information. Generally most of the people have these types of problems and they can overcome those issues by following tips which you are posted here. Useful information always appreciable.

Yes, thank you! This is exactly what I was looking for. I eat healthy but of course that means fruits and veggies. I avoid super gassy goods (broccoli) but it doesn't seem to matter what I eat. Going to get done ginger today!!

Hey Mamabeck; You may take half tea spoon of cinnamon powder with glass of warm milk, if cannot take cinnamon with milk you may add honey for taste.
Here have you observed one thing? These foods ginger, garlic, cardamom and cinnamon all are spicy and kitchen foods only. By taking these foods once/twice in a month you can avoid digestion problems, candida over growth also. In addition of these foods drink plenty of water, water is helpful in weight issues too.
