Gluten free...corn free??

Hello everyone,

I am very new to the Crohn's/Colitis scene, and am struggling with figuring out ways to self-manage my pain/bleeding.

I have been living a gluten restricted diet for quite some time(10 years) giving myself occasional treat times (and suffering the consequences of bloody diarrhea)

My diet has been a "celiac" approach...substituting other flours for wheat flours, including corn flour.

My question is this...gluten free no longer alleviates the belly issues, they are present with or without gluten. I have read through the forums about corn being a no-no...does that include processed corn such as corn flour, corn starch and corn meal?

Am I exacerbating my current condition with using these corn products?

Thanks for your input

Hi Star, welcome to the forum. Everyone is different as to what foods they can and cannot tolerate. It is true that many cannot tolerate corn or corn products, and you may want to try removing corn from your diet to see if that helps you. Diet, for all of us, is a trial-and-error thing. Personally I can tolerate gluten and corn products (not corn itself though, but I can eat corn chips and things like that), but I cannot tolerate dairy. So I would say give it a try. You may want to keep a food diary, too. There's a listing in the Wiki section of the forum that talks about how to set up a food diary and what to include in it. Good luck!

I agree with CAT. I am allergic to wheat..i dont have celiac disease but like any allergy I cannot tolerate wheat...can't eat tuna fish either lol. An elimination diet is the best way to figure out what you can and can not tolerate. There are several ways to do that and using a food diary is imperative when you do a serious elimination diet. Good Luck.

Hey Stargazer, I too did the gluten free for about a year , and I found somethings more dense and caused me to constipate. Corn is very hard to digest, in any form. Some people can it fine and others cant. I avoid it because there really isnt much nutritional value and why risk problems. But you could be fine, it is trial and error in this disease. Generally most poeple do well on the low residue diet.

I'vebeen told that corn in any form is not easy to digest...even if you do tolerate it fairly well. May naturopath has also told me to avoid products with soy in them.

I am a Celiac with an additional Crohn's diet that I put myself on as I have no diagnosis of Crohn's. In terms of corn, I can't eat it in any whole form whatsoever which is awful because I love corn. But as a Celiac I use a lot corn-based flour or pasta. I found I myself can tolerate the corn pasta and corn flour.
As it was already mentioned, it depends on trial and error. It has taken me a long time to discover it is red meat, nuts, and almost all veggies that flare me up. So I find a way to integrate my own version of the Crohn's diet into my gluten-free diet.

Might be because soy has gluten in it unless it is gluten free.

I eliminated all grains about two years ago when I was really sick. I've been able to add most back (rice-esp) but still stay away from gluten and most corn. I don't have the energy to avoid corn syrup so it sneeks in. I thought that Remicade was turning my stomach into steal and that I could attempt to eat whatever I wanted. Over the holidays my boyfriend and I went to Europe and I ate whatever I wanted for a month... lets just say - Remicade has not turned my stomach into steal and I'm back to gluten free!
