Hi all.
A quick question. I have a hard lump near my anus about the size of a bean. it hurts like a mofo. its under the skin. could it be an abscess or a fistula forming? can any1 with any experience shed some light.

I had a peri-anal fistula... It started off as a slight swelling under the skin, then became more swollen, like a hard bean under the skin, then it started to soften up before it burst open...
It does sound like you might be experiencing the same... It was VERY painful, sitting down, getting up, changing positions was excruciating. Have your doctor take a look at it, he will probably prescribe ciproxin and flagyl to start with.
Good luck.

thanks im seeing my GP on Thursday. dred the thought of having my bum examined. oh lord all mighty!!!

one more thing. I have UC. don't fistulas mainly happen to Crohn's patients.

It does sound like an abscess, if you do get prescribed antibiotics - hopefully they work! I was prescribed them for 10 days and I thought it was starting to work and the prescription ran out. I eventually had to get mine drained and a peri-anal fistula developed, but I have crohns.
Best of luck!

thanks folks. it kinda died down now. the pain is nearly gone and it feels softer. im not sure if im willing to bare all for the GP unless it flares up again. ill wait and see for a few more days.

I would highly recommend seeing your GP asap, a little bit of embarrassment is nothing in the long run if it develops into a fistula as those are extremely tricky to fix. :)

It's really critical your GI take a look. That's their job so they won't be surprised or disturbed by your request. If an abscess is not cared for it can become a big and dangerous infection. Your doctor may recommend antibiotics and or surgery in trying to treat it. In some cases they can even drain it in the office without you going to the hospital.
