Have I been mis-diagnosed?

Hi All
Just seeking some advice.
I've been in pretty good health all my life until 3 years ago when I came down with diarrhea and weightloss which lasted the good part of 3 weeks. After going to see my GP and having a blood test I was sent for a Flexible Sigmoidoscopy and was diagnosed with Crohn's.

I was put on a course of steroids for around 8 weeks which were gradually decreased. These worked wonders and within the week after taking them I was well again. Since then I have been on a regular daily course of Azathioprine which I have taken daily for the last 3 years.

Just recently I have begun to wonder if I do actually have Crohns. Apart from those 3 weeks, 3 years ago I have felt completely well and haven't had any bouts of D, constipation or anything I read about on these forums or anything I hear about from fellow sufferers. I eat/drink what I want and nothing causes 'flare-ups' or anything.

Is it possible that I could have been mis-diagnosed? Is there any short-term illnesses which mimic Crohns?

Did they do a biopsy during the flex sig? They usually "check the box" for CD dependent of those biopsies.

If you have been on medicaction then it could that it is keeping you in remission but if you have any doubts as to what you are dealing with I would discuss them with your GI. Explain your concerns to him and ask him on what criteria were you diagnosed with CD.

I hope you get some answers soon.

I'm not sure a biopsy was done... the doctor said "ah yes, this is Crohns" as he was actually doing the flexisig. I agree that it could be the meds keeping me well but is it unusual to be in remission for 3 years with no symptoms whatsoever?
I also agree that I will need to speak to my doctor ultimately although I don't have an appointment again until November.

Some do experience remission after the intial dose of steroids knocks down the inflammation and the maintenance med takes over.

I would investigate further, I'm sure the doc would be glad to go over the info. You might could just call for the results of that flex sig and talk with the GI nurse about them instead of waiting for the doc appt. Although, I'm not sure how all that works in your area.

Also, remember that those that have a case that was easily put into remission and have since went on with normal lives just remembering to take their "treatment" may not be the ones sharing on forums. If they aren't experiencing symptoms, issues or having their quality of life affected there isn't a reason for them to seek out support, kwim?
