Well, my son still has the lump on his bum cheek which although not too painful feels "heavy" and is uncomfortable when sitting both on a soft or hard surface, poor thing. This is after 8 weeks of strong antibiotics.
Finally got to see a surgeon yesterday so he is definately going to arrange an MRI hopefully next week and then going to have to get it removed/drained or whatever it is they do. Not looking forward to it but it has been dragging on for so long I am looking forward to it healing up.

We haven't had any issues like that Sascot! I hope it's an easy fix and not too invasive!

Excellent, I'd want something like that drained...I kind of like the very direct approach that is surgery.
Our adult neighbor age 48 who has had CD since age 19 has had fistula sx and it worked great; I hope it does for your boy, too.
With love... from a mother who wishes her kid could have surgery and "fix" things

Thanks everyone. I am feeling rather stressed about it right now. It's his birthday coming up and he so wanted to go karting - don't think that's an option if he can't sit!!
Mom2oneboy - what was your son's recovery time when he had his absess drained? Keep hearing awful stories! I'm not sure what kind of absess it is yet - it is just inside his right bum cheek (gotta love that we get to discuss lovely things like that)

Sascot,

The recovery was minimal. His abscess wasn't real deap. He had surgery and went home that same day. The worst part is the abscess before it's drained. My son couldn't sit on his hiney and could barely walk. Once they drain it he will feel SO much better!! There will be some tenderness but nothing like he feels now. His surgery was on a Thursday and he was at school on Monday. Had there not been a weekend, he would have been able to go back after a day of rest at home. You are going through the worst part now! BTW, my son's abscess was located at about 9 o'clock if you were looking at his bum hole....LOL.. He would be mortified if he knew I was talking about this online!!

Bonding over bum holes! Who would have thunk it??

Sascot, what antibiotic is he on now? We were on clindamycin (sp?) and it didn't help at all. S developed another abscess last month which drained on it's own (thankfully) and they switched him to Flagyl which he's still taking.

Could you not go through ER and get quicker results? S was hurting so bad we took him to our ER here at the Children's hospital and he had surgery that next day. Just a thought.

Hey Sascot,

I'm so sorry to hear that your boy is going through this hun. :(

No experiences with perianal abscesses here, only intra abdominal ones. Matt had a fistula with his but was on antibiotics too, Flagyl for the bowel and Augmentin Duo Forte for the abscess infection.

Good luck! I hope he finds relief very soon, bless him.

Yes - kids would freak if they knew we were discussing their bottoms online!!
I am actually a bit annoyed that they haven't drained it yet. He was in agony and feverish about 6 weeks ago and missed 2 1/2 weeks school but they don't seem to like surgery so went for antibiotics. Even the Crohns specialist didn't think he needed to go to a surgeon????
He has been on Co-amoxoclav, then Flagyl and Penicillin, then Flagyl and Ciprofluxacillin and now just Flagyl as the Cipro was making him feel sick.
All those antibiotics and still needing surgery - frustrating! They should have done it weeks ago! :voodoo: (I love that one too imaboveitall!)

I can certainly understand antibiotics as an initial first line treatment but it surely sounds as if they have let this drag on for far too long. :(

Never fun, huh? Alex's first fistula we had drained, but the wound never closed and he ultimately had surgery. That was what lead us to his dx. His 2nd fistula last year we tried oral antibiotics but then had to switch to 8 weeks of IV flagyl and cipro, which healed it. He had an MRI done to dx the fistula and confirm it gone. I wanted surgery again - quick and easy. But the doctors preferred to go the medical (ie antibiotic) route first, and really, they can only have surgery so much in that area and he's only 10. His doctor also considered EN, she said it was the common course of action to let the bowel rest while healing a fistula, but since he generally never felt pain from it, we didn't. But, we did then switch off 6MP for Remicade which also helps close fistulas.

Haven't had much news to update as yet - the hospital is dragging it's heels as usual!!
A week and a half they rushed us into the kids hospital to see a surgeon - they decided he definately needed an MRI - then nothing!
I phoned my community nurse who chased it up only to be told the IBD consultant and surgeon agree he needs an MRI - I'm sorry, didn't we know that already? :ybatty:
So here we are again - waiting for a date to go for the MRI.
Luckily my son is feeling a bit better and says the lump doesn't feel as "heavy" when he gets up from sitting position so maybe the antibiotics are finally working. That's the only reason I am not chasing them up again.
