Feeling pretty crap for the last couple of weeks when I thought things where coming round ok . Then all hell let loose after a short trip to visit my son in london . All my horrible symptoms returned but now with nausea and upper GI pain .
Went to the doctor and after a bit of faffing about i got tested for Helicobactor infection and it was positive. So im on a coctail of antibiotics and other stuff to kill it off . Im just a bit concerned of the after effects on my system. I never have nausea and this is really horrible , cant eat at all and feel Sh--.
Anyone had this Helicobactor thing and how did it turn out:ymad:

Hi there, not sure if this is much help but my mother-in-law was tested positive just before Christmas and was like you given a cocktail of antibiotics to take, they didn't appear to give her any problems although she doesn't have Crohns so it's probably not the best comparison, I'm sorry I can't offer anything more but I'm sure someone will be here soon to help. Sorry you're having to deal with this too, take.:ghug:

I have H-pylori. I refused the treatment as it very seldom works and it usually will come back. There are some natural remedies that can help. One is Siberian tiger Pine nut oil, Manuka honey, Mastic gum. Most everyone has H-pylori in their guts and most live fine with it, they have no issues with it. I think they only treat it when you develop ulcers. And even then, it usually does not go away. There is like a 30% success rate with the antibitoics. I would not take the cocktail. My GI doc even agreed and said NOT to treat it. He said the consequences and side effects from all those antibiotics together would be worse than the H-pylori!

Thanks for the info :
I spoke to my doctor today after a scope showed up duodenal uclers. He wants me to take to coctail of drugs and said it would cure it very quickly. Then later today after collecting the drugs I got a call telling me not to start the drugs as after he consulted with my regular doc he was concerned that it might be linked to my IBD and I have the ulcers from that aswell as the H -pylori. So basically I have to go to the hospital on monday for a load of blood tests and god knows what else.
More or less he said if it was my IBD then i may have to go in to hospital to get stronger drugs for a few days .
Basically I m now finding it difficult to eat because of the discomfort as well as my normal IBD stuff ,so this needs to get attended to soon .

Pvail, I am sorry you are dealing with all this. I am guessing they took biopsies? That should tell be able to tell if it is an ulcer caused by Crohns or the H-pylori. Do they have you on anything for relief, like zantac or anything? There is a med called Carafate that is really good for coating ulcers in the gut. You need a prescription for it. It can give some relief. Maybe you can ask your doctor about it. I hope you feel better soon. Maybe of you need IV antibiotics you can probably do them outpatient if you are not too bad off. They do have home health care nurses that can come out daily. It would be cheaper than staying in the hospital just for that.

Im taking Omeprazole for this at the moment and its ok , well doesn't feel as if its gettin worse since I took this now for a couple of days. Im on Asacol for the lower end and have been for a couple of years and that is just about working . But i will have to wait till monday I guess to find out the results . Not sure about biopsies as I was sedated because I couldn't swallow camera as Im very nauseaus with this H - pylori thing . Well I hope i dont have to go in to hospital as I have no faith in there communication skills and would be concerned about it not going well.

Peter.

Hi there just wanted to wish you luck on Monday, hope you don't need the hospital stay, best wishes.

I am glad the omeprazole is helping some, that is good. I am sure they did take biopsies, they usually do. I hope you don't have to go to the hospital either. I Hate hospitals and do Not trust anyone. It always seems like one hand does not know what the other is doing and something always goes wrong. You always have to be on guard. If you do have to go, is there anyone you can take with you? I find when I have to go to the hospital or ER for any reason I usually bring my husband or someone with me. I mean for instance, I am allergic to latex. Well I remember having to have a procedure done and was being checked by the nurses and stuff and me and my husband both had to remind nurses that I was allergic to latex. I mean my husband even got a piece of paper and wrote in big letters above my bed
Allergic to latex! And believe it or not, we still had to tell them, the nurse just got out the latex gloves and put them on. I mean you would think they would read charts first! Hopefully you wont have to go in the hospital. Maybe since you are getting a little help with the med, things will calm down some and you will be able to just do the meds at home.

had a similar experience. One doctor said first thing in the morning we are taking your appendix and or Gallbaladder out and the next doctor said i had pain because of a bulging disc in my back . Both treated me with pain killer and and anti inflamatories which I believed basically induced colitis as i have need been the same since.
But im mich better prepared now and will not be having any messing about .
Thanks and here goes.

So i got started the cocktail of drugs and bloody hell this is a weird feeling . Dont know if im coming or going but if it works it will be worth it . 5 days to go and Ive now spent more time on the loo than i have off of it in the last 24 hours . But atleast im starting to eat again so its not all bad .

Make sure you are taking lots of probitoics with all those antibiotics. They can deplete your gut of all the good flora and will put you at risk of getting C-diff as a result. Florastor is good one along with a heavy duty probiotic ( at least 100 billion counts) and you want a probiotic with many different strains of bacteria. Good luck and hope this works for you and you lick the H-pylori.

Yeah i did this a week or so ago . Took 7 days to come back and was positive. Treatment is a lot of drugs but lets hope it works . Makes you feel pretty crap but its only for a week .
Good luck

Well at the minute I dont think I could put anything else into my body , very nauseous and a lot of discomfort, generally all over the place. have to see doctor today as for some reason my abdomen has become very rigid and i dont feel well at all . Its probably just a side effect of the drugs but better to be sure . Ill wait till this course has finished first and then take a look at the pro biotics..

Which antibiotics do they have you on? I am sure the antibiotics are ripping up your gut. They are so hard on the system. How many days do you have left with them? I hope you start to feel better soon. The probiotics may help some actually with helping your gut repopulate the good bugs...

Im taking Clarithromycin, Amoxicillan and Omeprazole for the Helicobactor infection Along with Asacol and Amitrptyline for the IBD. Doctor was concerned about the rigid abdomen and is going to call me later . He took some bloods and poked me a lot . He concerned i might have a damaged appendix or some sort of infection. I could have told him that . Anyway the saga continues.
Peter

Oh wow, those are some very strong antibiotics. Did this feeling start After you started taking the antibiotics? Does he think it could be the antibiotics that caused this? Geez, I hope all is ok. Good thing you got in to see him. Hopefully you get the blood work results soon. I am not sure about it being a infection though since you are on some pretty broad spectrum antibiotics so I cannot see how it could be an infection?? Hope you get some answers and get to feeling better soon...

Not sure if it started after the antibiotics or is just a progression of the initial problem. Anyway he rang and said that i was positive for the Helicobactor infection but I could also have a another GI tract problem ( no kidding ) , so going for a CT scan of abdomen tomorrow to see whats going on.
At a guess i would say i have a lot of inflammation or something like that .
Peter

Make sure they do stool samples after all those antibiotics too, amoxicillin together with clarithromycin is a great way to get c diff and enterococcus.

Ok so thats over . The drugs appeared to have cleared up the infection and my CT Scan showed thickening in the small intestine near the TI . Appendix area is bloody painfull and going back tomorrow to chat to consultant as he is concerned that this might not calm down so ,at least there going to look at this again.
Thanks everyone for your input and help over the last couple of weeks , certainly helps .
Peter

Glad you are finished with the meds. How do they know that the H-pylori has been eradicated? Are you feeling better stomach wise? I am sorry to hear about the the appendix issues. Do they think you have to have it removed? Hope they get you fixed up and you feel better soon.

Well the upper stomach seems to have calmed down considerably so I am very pleased about that . I think they cant do another test for some time , but I will ask tomorrow. The LRQ appendix pain , i have this three years and they always do this . We are concerned in case it *(what ever it is ) gets toxic ? . So basically they dont want to mess up so they are going to take more bloods and stuff as usual.
My preference is that they dont remove it as I would rather they were 100% sure first . Im more concerned that the thickening near the TI doesnt go untreated as the meds Im on are mainly for the Colon . But I have put together a short list of questions to ask and I have also looked up the answers ( just in case im gettin fobbed off again ). But any how my stomach is gettin better so thats a good thing .
Peter

Hey Peter,

Well that is good that your upper gut is feeling better, so that is a plus! I agree, I would not want to have any unnecessary surgery either in regards to your appendix. Hopefully they can now figure out what to do about the issue in the TI and do from there. You will get through this, hang in there...
