The holidays are approaching, which is making me really miss my favorite holiday food - cheese popcorn. When I was younger, somehow it became a family tradition to eat cheese popcorn during the holidays. It didn't quite feel like the holidays until we had a big bowl of it to pass around. Now, sadly, I cannot eat anything in the popcorn family. I went xmas shopping with my mom last weekend and she bought a big bag of cheese popcorn. It was close to lunch time and we were headed to the restaurant, but she was really hungry and she actually opened the bag and started eating the cheese popcorn right next to me! She was apologizing the whole time but kept eating it. I could have died, the smell alone was amazing. I really miss cheese popcorn. :(

What holiday foods do you guys miss that you can no longer eat?

Nuts! Pecans and walnuts in the shells. And chestnuts. When I was a kid we used to sit round the fire at my parents' and my mum would roast chestnuts for me. And dates are another family Christmas tradition- though I might try one and see how it goes!

Eggnog! Sniff. How I miss eggnog...once I did put it in my mouth and swilled it around just to get a taste in my mouth...it was really hard to spit it out and not swallow. On the drinks table, I also miss hot rum toddies.

Brussell sprouts, as well. I'm one of those weird people that loves brussell sprouts! And yes, pecans and popcorn. Corn of any variety, of course.

im going to miss anything that has to do with nuts! probably was one of my favorite snack foods so it will be difficult. also where i just started pred im gonna have to steer clear of salty snacks so this xmas will be difficult treat wise :(

Nuts! They mess with me in really bad ways. I was bad and ate some a few days ago.. thought I could get away with it considering my guts are not too bad.. I was wrong.

OoOooh.. Cheese popcorn. Dang you, Cat. Now I want some!!

Ha ha. :) At least you didn't have to sit next to someone who was eating cheese popcorn, and smelling that delicious smell! My mouth was watering, it was torture! Ha ha, I think it was payback because my mom has gone gluten-free and I'm always eating bread or pasta in front of her.

turtles... no more turtles for me :( we have 3 boxes too, as they are my dads favorite. i think ill hide away when they are eatting them!!

does anyone have trouble with coconut? im not sure if i should have it or not! just made this awesome cookies that everyone is going mad for and wont try them cause im not sure if coconut is a problem or not

I agree with missing nuts so much :( I hate walking into the grocery store right now and they have fresh pomegranates and mixed nuts, (walnuts, almonds, chesnuts, etc.) both remind me so much of the holidays and are two of my favourite snacks (and so healthy)
:ymad:

Chex mix! I can pick the chex out of it but can't have the popcorn or nuts :( No fun. I'm the one who makes it too! Just cruel.

Personally, I would avoid them. I recall reading awhile back that coconut is pretty difficult to digest. However, I also had read that coconut oil can be beneficial for people with IBD, so I tried taking coconut oil supplements to see if they made a difference. They caused me awful stomach aches so I discontinued taking them, and now I avoid coconut in all its forms.

thanks cat! this holiday is gonna be a bit difficult with the goodies... trying to make smart choices though! no food is worth being sick for.. especially over the holidays!

I know what you mean, I can't do most treats either - they all seem to have something that upsets me, be it nuts or oatmeal or chocolate (some chocolate is okay, but most chocolates seem to cause me problems). When I'm feeling like I'm missing out on sweets, I usually make myself rice krispy treats, as I know I can safely eat those. I hope you are able to find some holiday treats you can eat too! :)

Cat - I came home from the grocery store yesterday to my better half making some for me. Ain't he great?!
<3

Nice Juicy Sweet tasting Corn . . . ..

every time I try i get loose and gassy within an hour or two. I so love corn with my Turkey dinners.

Awww, that is sweet. My hubby cooks for me but he usually tries to make healthy foods rather than sweets, so I have to make my own rice krispy treats. Good thing they're pretty easy to make, I'm a terrible cook and I can usually find a way to mess up the simplest of recipes, but I haven't managed to screw up rice krispy treats, yet. ;)

I just thought of another holiday food I'm going to miss - cashews! My in-laws always put packets of cashews in our stockings (even though we're in our 30s now they still think we need stockings, ha ha). Guess my hubby will get two packets of cashews this year. :(

ironically enough, I never ate much popcorn, or nuts of any kind before I got diagnosed. I can eat green bean casserole though, my favorites during holidays.

Me too!
sprouts, sage and onion stuffing, gravy, parsnips, sweetcorn, and pigs in blankets!
I'm only having turkey and boiled potatoes for Christmas dinner, sob!

Think I will too, I had chicken, boiled potatoes, carrots and stuffing at work Christmas dinner (and a bowl of custard for pudding), and I was sick after, so had better take it even easier at Christmas!

do most ppl have trouble with parsnips? ive been eatting them! :( im pretty sick last night and still this morning , i think i definitely over did it

i miss the russian tea cakes, and mainly all the wheat things..like cakes, pies, and cookies...my mother used to bake all these things for a few days before christmas and by the arrival of the big day the kitchen would be filled with containers of all kinds of cookies, I really loved these things made with butterscotch chips and Chinese noodles. And the peanut butter dunked in chocolate(i still eat these). I found a recipe for the russian tea cakes that is wheat free but I have not made it yet. I don't think it will taste anything like the originals though.
