so ive been on pred for a while now and just realized something, you know how it has a really bad taste, well when i first started taking it i hated the taste and would refuse to take it because it was so bad and so my mom told me to chew a piece of gum and then wrap the pred in it so i could swallow it without the taste. so my question is, do you think that the gum makes it digest any slower or different in a way that would be significant? i mean i know gum doesnt sit in there for years i saw it proved wrong on mythbusters ^.- but i was just thinking about it and thought i would make a post about it.

also, do any of you have ne better ideas for getting rid of the taste of the icky preds or any ways of preventing it? just curious! ^-^

That's odd, I've never noticed a bad taste and I've been on it for more than a year and a half!! I would imagine the gum would inhibit its digestion, but I really don't know for sure!

I don't think gum is digested at all, so if the pred is in the middle, it might well pass though untouched as well.

Are the pills coated or just the uncoated white ones?

I only noticed a slight yucky taste when taking pred. I used to put a mouthful of orange juice in my mouth then put the tablet in and swallow. That way I didn't have the tablet sitting on my toungue.

Not sure about the chewing gum? I wouldn't think it would be too good to be swallowing gum everyday, but I'm no expert.

its uncoated white tablets, i think theyre 10mg, but im taking 2 right now. and yea i dun think swallowing gum everyday can be that good buuuuut the taste is terrible! maybe because mine are generic they have a dif taste then name brand, not sure tho.....

hey spoon, yah the first time i took them they tasted so bad, and it made everything taste bad like 10 minutes after it too lol. but you just gotta do it quick.. And i usually eat something right after it to help get the taste out of my mouth... and how old are u? im 14

Hi bradraz im 18 and i would suck on a mint or something at first after taking it, i was on the liquid once in the hospital it was HORRIBLE!! imagine the taste of the pill but with grape medicine flavor added UGH and it would stick in the back of your mouth because it was the liquid. lol it was terrible but then i got the pills and to my dismay they were just as bad, oh well!

yeah spoon, i dont think its a good idea to wrap it in gum. your tummy cant break down gum, so who knows if the med is even getting absorbed??
just do it quick like brad said and then eat something tasty afterwards :)

yea thats what i will start doing and see if it helps any. also ive been doing research on drs in my area and am thing about going to one at the university of michigans gastrenterology dept. my mom has went to u of m for her migrains and ive gone with her to appts before (its like a hour and a half drive) and they seem very nice and accept my insurance. my mom is going to call next week sometime to talk with them and as for my grandma, i dun care she can suck it up and drive me there because i want a dr that i like and will help me not just rush me around. so any way anyone heard of anything good or bad about the u of m?

I have! You live by me :), this is the exact place I want to go to figure all my junk out. When I saw this thread I tried to look there to see if they took your insurance, but I don't think I found it, but I'm glad they do!

ALL of my friends, who grew up in Michigan, and one of my friends that got her medical degree at U of M say there are MUCH MUCH better doctors there than anywhere else in the state. The gastroenterology dept is #7 in the country, which is really good! And they have a special Crohn's and Colitis program. And on the website they list all the doctors and what there research is and what clinical stuff they look into so you can specify which doctor you want, someone that specializes in the type of Crohn's you have. I think this will be really great for you :) good luck and tell me how it goes! My dr said no to my referral but I'm going to continue working on him.

Take care!

really thats awesome!! but do you have to have a referral from a dr to go? ive not done too much research on them yet just thought about it today, i will def check out the link u gave and see. and when i call i will come back on and let you no whats goin on. thanx for the advise!!

I need a referral from my primary doc in order for insurance to pay for it, but i did see on the website that they take both doc referrals and self-referrals, I'm not sure how your insurance works, but maybe you won't need a doc involved at all, which i would prefer. good luck!

my primary dr is really nice so if i did need a referral he would give me one no prob! thanx for the luck!! its always helpful^-^

I tryed the salt on the tongue like they do when drinking Telquila and it really does work. Make sure you drop the pills on the part that has the salt on it and quickly drink 1/2 a glass of water... Good luck

I always let saliva build up, drop the pills into it, then chase it down with some juice. Split them into smaller groups if you are on 8 a day. Small amounts seem to be able to go easier without sticking.

I'd throw them all in my mouth at once, wash down with water then pop a jolly rancher in my mouth to suck on. The candy taste is strong enough to get rid of the pred taste.

hi there, please dont ever swallow gum. be careful with what you eat. with CD we have even more reasons to be kind to our digestive track. I wish i was your age again and stop eating junk at that moment. It took me 10 years of crohns to finally understand the importance of eating well and stopping crap food. I was in complete denial and though nutrition had nothing to do with health.
Its true pred is not tasty because the pill is not coated. have a mouthfull of some food you like that have very strong smell/taste in it such as garlic, onion, ginger, can be anything. Just before swallowing when its in puree in yor mouth, add your pred in the mix and swallow everything. Bon appétit :soledance:

I have the same problem with Prednisone! I first noticed it in the hospital.

I found Apple Juice really helps mask the after taste! I take my morning dose with a glass of apple juice and it seems to do the trick. In fact, if I take them with anything else I have a very hard time keeping them down. It's funny that before I started these pills I never drank apple juice and now I always have a few glasses a day :ysmile:
