I have had Crohn's since 2000 and it was seen in my small intestine at the end and in my rectum. I have had several fistula surgeries before being diagnosed. I take Pentasa 500 mg 2 pills twice a day. For a week, I have have increased loose stools and have developed alot of pressure in my rectum and sitting is becoming uncomfortable. I have upped my Pentasa and have an appt with the dr tomorrow afternoon. Is this a flare and what do you think they will do. I am really nervous because since I have been diagnosed, I have had no problems until now.

Any other symptoms? Looks like it could be a flare coming but youll have a better idea when you see your doctor. He may start you on some meds to head it off if it is one, and its a very good idea to do that.

Thanks for the response. I don't have any other symptoms except alot of pressure and going to the bathroom alot...very loose stools.

Does sound like it may be the start of a flare...could also be an abscess...definitely time to get to the doctor and have it checked.

Sandy, I'm coming down from a flare but pressure was a big symptom of mine..When it was the worst, I couldn't stand up straight because of the pressure was so bad and it would give me shortness of breath.

Those do sound like symptoms of a flare incoming, make sure your doc knows all of the symptoms and he should get your on meds unless he thinks its something else.

Check your heart rate ..an increased heart rate probably means flare too.

Sandy, Pentasa is a bandaid fix for a compound fx. You need to be on the big guns for Crohns. Please go to your doctor or change doctors if he won't make adjustments. Perianal symptoms are very difficult to manage. Please get an experienced colorectal surgeon and knowledgeable IBD GI doc to help you.

I will tell the dr all my symptoms. The pressure seems to remain as long as there is stool close by. In the evening I feel no pressure or hardly any..It is much worse in the morning. I have managed my Crohn's with Pentasa for 13 yrs and my last colonoscopy 2 yrs ago showed no inflamation at all but I believe things have changed. Stress at work isn't helping. We have a family business that is struggling in this economy.

Well, my dr said I was in a flare. My lower colon (rectum) is inflamed. I am taking immodium morning and night, doubled my Pentasa, and I am on the BRAT diet until symptoms resolve. Also, I was given Flagyl to take 3x per day.
