Is my cold dangerous to someone with compromised immunity?

My boyfriend was recently diagnosed with Crohn's disease and is currently taking Humira. He and I live about 50 minutes apart, and I drive down to stay with him on weekends. This week, I've come down with a cold--sore throat, runny nose. I'm concerned about giving my cold to him, with the Humira affecting his immune system. How worried do I need to be?

Hi. With the Humira, his immune system is compromised so there is probably a greater chance of giving him whatever you have.

When I catch a cold, it takes twice as long for me to get better, and I'm much sicker. I worry about it turning into pneumonia.

Im on azathioprine and i stay away from anyone whos ill like the plague! I did get a cold from my fiance and it did really hit hard even though it was only a mild cold. Also in the past ive got respiratory infections from simple colds. So i would hold off until your better, you dont want it to turn into pneumonia.

I've just shaken off a nasty chest infection, but it was very very hard on me.
Immunosuppression is a real worry especially in the winter months with so many bugs etc around.

Hey there,

I know that when i get sick i get it twice as bad as everybody else around me that is healthy. Everybody thinks I'm a germaphobe but to me, it is my reality.:ack:

Just my personal experience.

All the best to you,

During one of my hospital visits a couple years ago, in a flare, they gave me the pneumonia vaccination to protect me. They did this at the same time as the flu shot. Also, as a teacher, I really get worried this time of year with all the germs as we can't get out much due to the cold temps. Even when I run to the grocery stores I will generally wear gloves to help not directly touch the sufaces everyone else has. Clorox wipes are my friend!

Lisa,

We aren't just reading the same novel, or on the same page, we are on the very same sentence and the very same word.

So glad somebody else appreciates this reality for us sick kids, young or old.

Yours until Russia gets hungry and eats Turkey fried in Greece,

eleanor_rigby, I was told I couldn't get the shingles vaccine because I was on Humira (is there a discussion thread here about this?) but I had to look up the pneumonia vaccine. See below. Note the part about people with weakened immune systems.

Yes you can't get the shingles vaccine because it's live. We can't get any live vaccines. However the pneumonia jab is not live so is safe for us to get along with the flu jab.
