Hi;:sign0085:
I have posted previously, but lately have been having very bad days, almost living in the bathroom in the tub. I am confused and so very frustrated.
I am 47 yrs old just diagnosed 2 years ago after a bowel obstruction, yes late in life and because of being diagnosed so late I think my test shows damage that just can't be fixed.
Anyway surgery 2 years ago for obstruction surgeon told me they were going to remove the obstruction and after that I would be great able to eat again. I had one other previous bowel surgery before that to have my appendix removed about 5 years ago. I had several endo and colonoscopy throughout the years showing no problems.
Anyway when they removed about 20 cm of small bowel that later tested positive for crohns in the lab. they also did strictureplasty in 4 other areas. Didn't even look like crohns to the surgeon. For 2 years since pretty much been told all in my head and after being on azathioprine for about a year and another surgery to which I was told there is nothing wrong with me and maybe I have IBS as I am in remission.
Finally they sent me for a capsule endoscopy and here are the results (all in the small bowel):
time issue
115 min surgical clip, small ulcer, deformity possible anastomosis
181 min anastomosis, deformity, small pseudodiverticulum
195 min Generalized edema
198 min small ulceration with deformity
220 min aphthous ulcer with non surgical stricture , marked edema, erythema (45 min to pass)
289 min black base aphthous ulcer, surgical stitch, stenosis, small inflammatory polyp (over 45 min to pass)
340 min 2 subtle areas stenosis very distal ileum before large bowel
total time 345 min to large bowel, no large bowel issues noted
I am on azathioprine and just recently started remicade infusion.
I've been informed that remicade will not help the strictures and my GI doctor told me he did not feel that the small amount of crohn's in my bowel would be causing my issues. He still feels more IBS is my problem. But he finally prescribed some pain medication, dilaudid, of which I am allow to have 1-2 tabs(mg) up to 3x a day. The pain medication is not helping, I can't eat and have lost more weight yet again. My weight fluctuates like crazy. I stop eating and start to feel somewhat better then I start eating and get very sick again pain, nausea vomiting (everyday if I do not take zofran) bloating (stomach is always rock hard). I am just so very tired of being sick. I do not see an end in sight.
Yes, I am on a low fibre diet. I am also allergic to dairy as well as being severely lactose intolerant. Also recently diagnosed with severe food allergies to sugar cane, cranberries, sesame seeds.
So is there anyone out there that has a similar diagnosis that can tell me what if anything that worked for them.
I am so tired of fighting being sick. I just need it all to get better. I do not need to be healthy, but I need to be able to at least walk without severe pain all the time. Can't have more pain meds, as that apparently will cause more harm than good, so I just have to suffer. I am familiar with being sick as I grew up with asthma and spent time in the hospital every winter.
I am just so exhausted. I've worked hard all my life, had a good job, which I was dismissed from after my long term disability insurance declined me after they were informed I was in remission. I do have a lawyer taking care of that now.
I really need some hope that it can get better. I really do not feel at this time it will as recently I have gotten much worse since starting remicade. Living in the bathtub is not fun.
Thanks,
Mag

Hello Mag,
So sorry to hear of the bad time you are having, and I am sure it seems endless to you.
First I would ask if you have considered getting another GI opinion---does not sound as if you have the best from your description.
Have you tried heat, in the form of heating pads, hot water bottles to help with the pain and discomfort.
Sometimes pain killers can make us feel worse and some have a depressive tendency.
Remicade is a very good biological but does not work for everyone.
How many doses have you had to date, sometimes it takes time to be noticeably effective but usually after the fourth infusion things should be getting better.
If Remicade fails, then there is Humira.
So there is always hope that in the long run there will be something to help you.
I know its hard to believe this when there is so much pain and other symptoms to tolerate.
But it will get better with the right treatment and the right specialists.
Feel better soon
Hugs and best wishes
Trysha

Thanks
I would like to know if anyone has had any luck with remi helping with stenosis. I started going to the hospital for diarrhea over 13 years ago at that time the colonoscopy and endo showed inflammation from throat all the way through to anus. Sodium chromoglycate helped for about 5 years then started getting very bad again but they could not find any problems only distended bowel which I was told was not a big deal.
Anyone have any ideas what I can do for some relief. I've tried heating pads but a very hot tub with Epsom salts for hours and hours is the only relief. I really don't know why I even bother with the pain meds.
I'm just so tired. I've been sick for so long I really don't have any energy left. My husband literally does everything. Thank god my kids are not young. I hate tv shows and movies but at least they help somewhat to take my mind off my stomach a bit.

I've also went into full early menopause 3 years ago. Not to downplay asthma. I had that since 3 till now and it was severe up to age 20 but at least I could get on my maxi mist machine and get relief. Unfortunately I can get no relief from crohns and I really need some relief. It has been years. I do not understand the idea of flares as I have had symptoms daily for over 13 years to one extreme or another and the past 6 years have been very bad.
Anyone have any ideas.

Hi Mjr, have you ever tried using cannibis? I use a vaporizer and I got my life back since using it, do my thing in the morning (bowel motions) then have a toke and I'm good for the rest of the day. It helps w paIn, appetite and nausea

Yup cannabis butter in cookies. Also tried cecemet. I'm fairly confident my biggest problem is the partial obstruction from stenosis. The pain whe. The bowel gets blocked is so bad. I stop eating and after a few days 2-4 it finally gets through and gets out. Then I start eating a bit again and the cycle starts all over again.
Forgot to say I also break out in a sweat several times per day. About 6-10 times a day. It is so uncomfortable.
I quit smoking 10 years ago so really do not want to try smoking cannabis.
I've been dealing with this for years and have tried so many things. I only go to hospital when my bowels refuse to move after 5 days or more.
Sorry to be a pain in the butt and so negative. I had stomach problems from birth because of the dairy problem and other food allergies. Asthma was soooo much easier and I have scar tissue from that as well.
Would having all small bowel removed be an option and just have a feeding tube thingy. I know this is drastic and desperate. But I feel very desperate. Changing docs is not an option as there really are extremely long wait list. I would likely wait a year or more.
Even the second surgeon that opened me up said nothing was wrong with me and I likely had no reason to live and be active. She told me I should basically get off my ass and get a life. Yoga she told me might help me. I wish I could do yoga. I can't even take a walk without getting very nauseaous

Im sorry you're going through such a hard time, I don't know what the answer is, but you should seek medical advice ASAP by the sounds of it, and if you're unhappy with the result go for a 2nd opinion until you find a solution. Be strong, God bless.

I've researched final options if this does not work.
Dyk that 2% of the people that choose assisted suicide where it is legal have Crohn's disease.
Sad but true. I guess that is from no hope in a future.
I'm not there yet but feel within the next bit if cant get fixed somewhat. It sucks to be a burden when I've been a workaholic all my life.

If the remi doesn't help my plan is to eat something hard and larger than the cap camera that will cause a full blockage within 3-4 hours go to the hospital in different city and get the blockages cut out through emergency surgery. If that doesn't help then there is really nothing left to try. This option is about 4-6 months away. That is how long I will give the remi to start showing some improvement. I did find a website that suggests remi helps strictures. However the way it is set up appears false as it says in a study of # of patients and uses current date that after 3 years strictures that were a side effect of Remi were gone.
