Hi,

My husband had surgery last Tuesday, he had an ileostomy and all went well, he was out of bed and sitting in a chair on Thursday, bruised and battered but doing ok, on Friday he relapsed and is really ill now, I was up with him yesterday and the Doctors say they are pleased with his progress now but he says he feels worse than ever and he can hardly talk and diden't want me up there today. I'm really worried and scared.

Hi and welcome to the forum! :D

Being his wife aren't you able to speak with his doctor to find out more information (you should be able to call and speak with him or the nurses at least)? I don't quite understand why you husband doesn't want you to visit him especially if he's feeling worse.

I'm gonna move your thread to the stoma subforum to see if you can get more responses there.

Thanks for your help, I have spoken to the Doctors and they say its unfortunate but this does occasionally happen, he's caught a chest infection now and can't talk, anyway thanks again.

Welcome to the forum Rua. Your husband had surgery the 19th of April?

I am concerned that he seems to be worse? Have they decreased his pain meds? You say the Dr's are pleased with his progress, but they havent given you any indication of why he is not so good? I know you can certainly have a 'bad day' after that major of an operation. Have they been able to give him any food yet, even broth or jelly?

Can you get any more information from his Dr's? Was his surgery an emergency and unexpected by any chance? If so, it is very possible it is hitting him hard emotionally right now.

Can you please let us know how he is getting on? Kudos to you for coming on here, and again, welcome.

Sorry Rua, we were typing at the same time! Chest infection is awful that soon after an op! Bless him! They need to get that cleared up ASAP, he shouldnt be coughing!

Ooo, ya coughing after surgery is no fun at all. Hopefully they get that under control soon. D: Ouch!

HI Rua and welcome.
Recovery from stoma surgery can be a very bumpy ride.
On the day after my surgery I felt great. Then all hell broke lose and I was very sick for weeks. The nausea just did not stop. I can't imagine the pain your hubby must be feeling if he has a chest infection.
Hang in there - it will pass. It just may take some time.

Take heart, he's in the right place to get the help he needs. I developed blood clots in my lungs during my surgery, and then I got a blood infection and was in the hospital for 24 days. It was rough going at first, and it's hard to visit with those that want to see you when you're tired and in pain. Don't be offended if he doesn't want to see you, he likely doesn't want you to see him feeling poorly and unable to speak (it's hard to talk when you're having a hard time breathing).

Welcome, Rua!

My sympathies on your husbands' chest infection. Hopefully that will clear up relatively quickly and then no more complications from surgery. There is a lot of good information in the stoma subforum that might help your husband as he adjusts to his ileostomy. Good luck to you both!

Hello Rua
It is major surgery so knocks you for six, with physical ups and downs post surgery. I didn't want my wife or family visiting when I looked and felt like crap. I relented and let my wife visit because the nursing care was so awful she had to sort me out!
Hope things soon improve, best wishes.
ps my dad is from Dublin, mother from Tipperary!
