Hi all, My son has suffered from the above, which come and go but at the moment very painful, hes had a stool test which looks like he has an IBD going to the hospital soon for more confirmation. Has anyone else suffered form these red lumps /spots on scalp? as I am now thinking it has something to do with having IBD like when he is having a flare up these get worse. Hoping this is related so things might settle down for him when he starts treatment as they are very painful at times. Many thanks for any replies.:ghug:

Is he on any treatment right now? Off hand, it sounds like folliculitis. Mine was caused by Remicade. That is why I ask if he is on medication right now . I would take him to the dermatologist . I am not sure. Please let us know what happens .

Hi, yes he is seeing a dermatologist, and has been on antibiotics for over 2 years, but not really getting anywhere, so I was just wondering if this would have any connection with IBD as his flare ups of lumps come and go, so was wondering if there was a connection?? also all his tests they have done with the derm have been negative, they didnt do a biopsie as when he was called, as there was nothing to biop, so theres no real infection so to speak. Im sure I have seen people on the net with Ibd who say this sometimes happens with them, so really just hoping when he starts treatment it might help the lumps.

Hi welcome.

There are extra intestinal manifestations(EIMs) of IBD. Joints, skin, eyes to name a few.

Here is a link that discusses some of the more common ones and includes those with skin.

www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3127025/

Also, I'm going to tag my little penguin, dance mom as they have kiddos that deal with skin EIMS.

I'd make a note to question the GI andidn't also get a recommendation to a dermatologist that is familiar with the skin issues that can occur with IBD.

Yes I get these too and have Crohn's disease. I'm taking methotrexate though and it seems to have appeared since starting on it. Sometimes it's hard to brush my hair as my scalp can get really sore (mainly towards my hairline). I also get tiny sore blisters all over my hands too. A pharmacist said it will just be to do with a change in weather but I think it's to do with my Crohn's. Hope your son gets some answers soon.

Hi he gets these but is not yet on any medication for IBD, so was wondering if this could be related to the IBD.

Many thanks for this, Iam new to all this so dont really know about the TAG bit sorry x

Oh sorry, when I tag someone (type their username) it should notify them of your post so they can come by and give their experiences with their kiddos and skin issues.

Ds has had lots of skin issues
The most recent is sweets syndrome
Which in ds case look like
Pimples/hives/bug bites depending on how they decide to show up
He had them on and off for years but recently ( 6 months ago ) got a lot worse
Only had them biopsied a few weeks ago to confirm
The dx

I found the best way is to call when it's active and state it happens typically every x number of weeks -is it ok if I call the next time it appears to get a biopsy .

Our dermo for ds actually just told us to come in within two days of calling to get the biopsy done

Sweets can be itchy or sore
But unlike hives they stay in the same spot for more than 24 hours

No real diagnosis only Follicitus, but I think its worse than follicitus. I think they say a Follicitus diagnosies on many spots/lumps that show up with no real cause.
I had it a couple of years ago. It was a reaction to Remicade and wouldn't respond to antibiotics. I had to have surgery.

Hi son is not yet on any meds, we go on friday to hospital as his stool sample was very high for IBD and he has all the other common symptoms of IBD that are not related to digestion system ( pink eyes, thirst, tiredness etc) so was wondering if the IBD could be causing the lumps to a point or not helping, hope this all makes sense lol
