My 12 year old has his second methotrexate injection on Thursday night. He just woke up tonight with ear pain so my husband took him to ER because he was in so much pain. They gave him a dose of amoxicillin and he is back home sleeping now. However, after reading online, it seems to be a big no-no with the methotrexate. Has anyone else had children take amoxicillin while on methotrexate?

Yes. My daughter did the same for an ear infection. You should check with your gi but ours said it isn't a big no no really. What the amoxicillin does is actually increase the mtx in your body but our kids are on such low doses and the antibiotic course so short that it really only increases one maybe two doses. However, my daughters had been on mtx for awhile and all their liver numbers were fine. So I would just run it by the GI and get the firm ok. I guess there is a chance they may want to decrease mtx slightly if your son has elevated liver numbers or something like that.

Hope he feels better soon. Shame on the hospital for not catching that warning. Or maybe they did and decided it was ok but they should have said something to you.

We did a course of augmentin (has amoxicillin in it) while taking MTX, no one mentioned a problem with it.

My ped just prescribed amoxicillin for my son yesterday ...I told her he takes mtx and she didn't say anything....I didn't even know it *might* be a non-no until seeing your post or I would have specifically asked.

My son is on Remicade and oral MTX. He had a throat infection in January and was prescribed an antibiotic. I'm pretty sure it was amoxicillin.

Just be careful Lucy did have a reaction while amoxicillin with methotrexate, he leg broke out in burn like blisters, it sounds worse than it was but she can't take it now. Any reaction just stop the antibiotic and call doct for an alternative
