milk?

Hi , does anyone think that drinking alot of milk can cause a flare ? my 8 year old son has crohns, he doesnt suffer any pain or diarrhea and is doing very well but the last weekend he was drinking alot of milk and i noticed he was going to the toilet for poos 2 or 3 times a day rather than just the once a day ( he generally goes once or every second day). so i hav cut back on him drinking alot of milk. also the other night we made cakes ( just the packet bought mix ) and that night his tummy was sore, im guessing thats because the mix had colours in and im putting it down to that. I find it hard to tell sometimes with my son as he doesnt show symtoms with his crohns. Im thinking tho that it could have been a flare as his eczema flared again too on his legs and since he started his meds last year his skin has been eczema free. xx

I'm not sure about it actually causing a flare but there is something called secondary lactose intolerance.

Normally the cells that line the small bowel produce an enzyme called lactase and it is responsible for breaking down lactose and aiding it's digestion. If your son has CD in the small bowel, which is sounds like he does, then damage or inflammation can cause the same symptoms as lactose intolerance...gas, bloating, diarrhoea. Perhaps this is what happened with your son?

I hope things settle hun.

Thinking of you and please keep us posted.

Dusty. xxx

My Crohn's was set off with a bowl of ice cream and tummy pain. A lot of people with Crohn's are lactose intolerant. I know I can't drink milk.. but that doesn't mean you (or your son) have to settle for soy or rice milk or whatever. Soy isn't great for your body anyway, and it doesn't taste good either!

I drink lactose-free milk. I don't know where you live, but I live next to a Central Market which also has lactose-free chocolate milk (the only place I've been able to find it), and it's the best chocolate milk I've ever had. I drink gallons of the stuff and it doesn't affect my Crohn's :) Most of my friends are scared of lactose-free milk because they think it will taste bad (first of all - how can it be worse than soy?) but I've been drinking it so long, I love it and prefer it over regular milk. It's a little less creamy and a little sweeter but still tastes good. There are also really good lactose-free ice creams out there. Best part is - it's still milk :) I don't think it would hurt to use a substitute and see if your son still has problems, but you should ask your son's doctor!

PS - there are also vegan butter spreads by Smart Balance that taste awesome. I think some are soy-based and others are olive-oil based. And there's some really good vegan mayo out there:)

Diet doesn't cure Crohn's, but it can really help. I switched to an all organic, safe-food diet - I eat almost the same thing everyday because I know it's safe (I especially avoid harsh fibers like wheat, sodas, alcohol, tobacco, acidic fruits and juices, spicey foods and dairy). When I stay on my diet, I feel pretty good.

thanx for that loriebird, he has an appointment with his doc in december so i will mention it when we are there. x

I stick to almond milk. Cows milk makes me bloat. There are lots of dairy free ice creams out there, made with soy, coconut, or rice milk.
