My doctor sucks

A few days ago I went to the doctor to get a referral, which the gastroenterology center near me requires. I've been seeing this doctor for about a year, so he knows the extent of my stomach problems. He has told me before that he doesn't think I have Crohn's or UC, however this was before I was bleeding so I figured maybe he would change his mind. After waiting for about an hour and half--there was only one other patient there, by the way--I finally got to see him. I explained that I went to the ER, had a CAT-Scan, and was told that I probably have Crohn's or UC, he decided to act like I was just pretending to be sick. Did I mention that he kept interrupting me when I tried to tell him what was wrong? He then proceeded to treat me like I was a junkie because I wanted more hydrocodone, telling me that they aren't good for me to take and so on. I explained that I only take them when I flare around my period, and that I am far from addicted to them. He then asked me if I had seen a gastroenterologist. I said no, that's why I'm here. He said it sounds like I need a colonoscopy. No s***, really?

So after being treated like crap, he decided to give me a referral, only guess what? It's going to take between 2 weeks to a month before I can get it. I spent the next hour crying because this is just another freaking obstacle on my way to getting better. I am so tired of people thinking I am pretending to be sick. Do people think I enjoy it?!?!?!?!

Is it two weeks to get the referral or 2 weeks until the appointment?

Once you get a GI specialist dont go to that doctor again for anything to do with IBD. I know that when I am flaring its particularily bad during my period. I hope you get some answers soon. I had to wait 3 months for my first scope. I got tired of waiting and went to the ER. I told them that they suspect I have colitis and my scope wasnt for 2 more months. They decided to scope me right then and there. It was worth it because I got my diagnosis and medication right away instead of waiting another 2 months. Sometimes you gotta be the squeaky wheel.

Hi Lydia. It's at least two weeks before I can even get the referral, I don't know how long it will take to get the appointment. I will definitely not be going back to that doctor again for anything. Thank you for the reply. :)

Why does it take so long to get the referral??!? Do you live someplace with nationalized health care?

I'm so sorry you have to wait so long! I don't think you should go back to that GP ever! Can you change doctors? That one seems to have no compassion at all.

Good luck - hang in there! - Amy

Hi Amy. Nope, I live in the good ol' US of A, but I do have health insurance. Anytime I've gone to the doc for a referral I've gotten it the same day, so this is very puzzling to me. I will def be changing doctors! :)

My husband got everything straightened out--he called and called and called them until they were so annoyed that they went ahead and gave me the referral. :)

Glad he got you the referral.....sounded like a bunch of bunk that it would take 2 weeks for that! Geesh...all it is is a piece of paper/phone call!

Hope you get things straightened out soon....when I was finally diagnosed (but still not 100% correctly!) it took my Mom not taking 'nothing is worng except a hysterical mother'.....and pushing for me to see doctor after doctor until they figured it out......that is how I ended up at Yale New Haven Hosp!
