I was out running today and came up with this idea to log my 12 day run up to the Dublin marathon on the 31st of October. This is my 4th Dublin marathon but my first after been diagnosed with Crohn's Disease.

Today I ran 10k (6mi) in 47 mins and am really happy with this. Last year I was running 10k at this stage of my training in 46.30 mins...so not to bad after all. There was a very strong northerly wind blowing, which made it seem very cold about 7'C (44.6F). It has been quite mild this last month, so this was a bit of a shock to the system..!!

I am currently on 4gms of Pentasa a day and it appears to be agreeing with me in my training. The 5 Asacolon and Imuron were causing me no end of problems while running. My knees were getting a bad deal from the meds and the running..:) Poor knees. But the joint pain has disappeared and I am running freely again. 3 weeks a go I was running 10k in over 52 mins and not happy at all.
I ran 20 miles (long run) last week and felt good at the end of it, so am tapering my training now. I am delighted CD has not prevented me from participating in this marathon.

I am off work again tomorrow, so I plan on doing another 10k run..at least all going well...:)
Thanks for reading..

Good Luck Del, I'll be cheering you on from the sofa eating my Halloween goodies.
I had the joint pain on Imuran and now asacolon, never really had anything to worry about when I was on pentasa. Very cold today in Louth, I'm snuggled on the sofa with a cuppa after I caught my little one's cold, think I spoke too soon the other day when we spoke about the flu ***.

You take care and get done with that cold quickly..:)
Will need all the cheering I can get.
Thanks Gwen..

Nice job del!!!! I'm training for a half marathon in early december. I'm only up to 3 miles a day because my knees have been bothering me. I've also been biking to build up my knee strenghth. I ice and elevate my knees after every workout and make sure to stretch well before and after. Any advice you might have for knee problems?

The predisone has also giving me a ton of energy!!!

Good luck with training!!!!

Thanks Shawn and glad your involved in running.
I have to admit to never stretching BEFORE my runs, but certainly I do warm down after.
I usually warm up by running my first mile quite slowly and then up (or try) my speed.
This makes interesting reading if you have time Shawn..http://saveyourself.ca/articles/stretching.php
While I was on Imuron recently I had terrible sore knees and it was just getting worse...I use this..http://mccabespharmacy.com/shop/hea...oint-care/optima-joint-complex-gel-125ml.html and find it gives very good relief and its natural...:)

I like the stretching article. I was actually a kinesiology and sports studies major in college, and most of my teachers told me that stretching wasn't proven to be beneficial. But so many people who are "runners" say you should stretch. I kinda just bite my tongue and stretch anyway, lol.

Biking has been very beneficial to building up my knee strength. I also have been taking a protein/carb/createn supplement after my workouts, and I have been recovering much faster.

I will def try to get a gel like the one in your link at my local pharmacy. Thanks for the links.

Weather today was, wet and cool..about7'C (44F) again
I ran 13.1 miles (21k) in 1h 42ms and was very pleased with this run.
I had no issues and every thing seems to be working fine with my body..:)
This is my last long run before the big day. I work the next 2 days on 12 hour shifts so no running again until Sunday. So I decided to do this long run today to give me time to recover and just do light 3-5 mile runs to stay loose for next week.

Getting excited now that I am back on target.
Need to make sure I get good rest also and begin my carb loading from midweek onwards...
Thanks for reading..:)

Good luck Del, I'm wishing you well and even a little envious. Go for it

I've done quite a few half marathons, never had the bottle to do the full one. Its been a few years now since my last in Glasgow. I really love running but stopped just over a year ago due to fatique. Would love to get back into it. The best I can do now is golf and my knee is struggling with that. I really should get to the docs.

I read all the notes above about the knee's, thats what preventing me from getting back into it. I'm worried due to age (late 40's), all the years of basketball and running have done my knee's in, particularly the left.

Keep it going and we'll hear how you go.

Spent the last 2 days in work..so no running.
But with 1 week to go it is important to stay loose and not to allow muscle to tighten up..even after 2 days without a run.
So at every available opportunity yesterday and today..I stretch and keep stretching..:)
In work they know I am close to my marathon and are aware of my antics..
I only ever stretch when I am not running.
8 days to go now..

Wow! so amazing..Gosh I havent ran since I was a kid lol...:eek2: but I do envy you that you are able. Are running for a cure or just a marathon? Go go go !!!!

Am just running because I can to be honest... not very good at trying to get money out of people for sponsorship.......Thanks Pen.

Ran 3.5 miles this evening. There has been a storm blowing here all day with heavy rain and no sign of a let up or a break of any sort..:)
I love running in the rain and especially at this time of year. Leaves blowing every where and the wind whistling in through the trees, reminds me of when I was a child...But this is all about staying loose this week, so just short distance running and nice an easy to conserve energy. Every thing feeling good!!!
Hope it is raining on marathon day...:)

Awh I was going to do TC Seattle, but I dropped out. It would have been so neat to meet you guys.

Del - You are an inspiration. Keep it up! I love running in the rain too. I suppose in Seattle and Dublin that's a necessity. :D

Well after some of the heaviest rain in over 100 years..http://news.sky.com/home/uk-news/article/16095645 I managed to get out for another 3.5 mile loose run today. No luck yesterday. It was important to get out today as I will be in work the next 2 days on 12 hour shifts.. which would have meant 4 days without a run.

Every where was flooded..more like a swim then a run...:)
Barium x-ray on Friday...hope to get a run in after that.....:)
Only six days to go..
Thanks..

Hey Del
Fair play to you, that was some rain to be running in. I have been watching on tv all day, couldn't believe me eyes. Hopefully all will be back to normal for the marathon on Monday.

Today is Friday so I have to go for a barium x-ray this morning. get in the car but there is to much traffic so after about 15 mins I turn back and get on my bike and cycle the 8k to the hospital...8k later and I am back home..:) Drinking lots of water to get barium out of my system...though it is fairly scuttering out of me any how..:)

I use the cycle as loose training and this afternoon I only run 1.5 miles. A nice run with a lovely blue sky. Continue to eat lots of carbs and am taking a protein drink as well. the excitement builds now..Tomorrow I go in to the marathon expo to pick up my chip and number..

Weather report for marathon Monday is looking very wet and windy. Heavy rain moving in from the Atlantic......bring it on...:)

Hi Del, are you taking it easy this weekend and watching the diet, staching up the carbs for monday.

I take it the route is all ok after the rain. Good luck again, keep up the good work

Collected my number and chip today..:)
14,280 people have registered for it...which makes it the biggest Dublin marathon ever...
The current record is 2 hrs 9 mins set last year...I think.
Last year I ran it in 3 hrs 51 mins.....and all going well I will do it under 5 hrs this year

My belly feels fine on the Pentasa and my training went well in the last 4 weeks.
Tomorrow I am going to rest as much as I can.
The clocks go back 1 hour tonight ...so that is a good start already...:)
Thanks...

Good luck Del! I know you are gonna do amazing.

I did my half in 3:21:00.... so don't feel bad! :rof:

Thanks for the good luck from you all..:)
The barium is still going through my system and I still have diarrhoea. I ignored it yesterday but it is bugging me this morning with some cramps..
Am doing nothing today at all...except go out for some immodium...:rof:

I am doing this race if I have to wear double nappies..
I ate quite a it of pasta and sauce yesterday and that might explain the reddish look to my toilet this morning...:voodoo: I really hope.
Anyway, thats it no more to be done...
Thanks..

really praying for constipation for you, Del. i loved sport when younger but crohns took it from me. i'm sure many of you know that feeling of being denied the ability to do what we can't.

what time does it start, Del, and isn't Monday a bit odd?

good luck though, hope the cramps vanish

Thanks man!
Its a bank holiday over here tomorrow so it is always held on the bank holiday.
Race starts at 10.00.
We really are a mad lot here...:) I am praying for constipation..:rof: and if I get it for more then a day I am terrified. I am getting an internal blockage and might need surgery..:rof:
Thanks again Spooky..:)

I finished in 3 hrs 53 mins
I will write a little report later on regarding the experience.
I came in 3704th out of 14220....So very happy...
Thanks..

I was well on target to beat last years time but hit cramp at 23 miles..:(
I have never suffered cramp in my racing career, so I can only put it down to diarrhoea I experienced since the barium x ray!!! Not enough salts in the body...I over looked that me thinks. At 8 miles I was @68 mins...at 13.1 miles I was @ 1:53 mins...and at 20 miles I was @2:53..

At about 23 miles I started to feel cramp in my right calf but kept running..:ybatty: By 24 miles my time pace was slowing big time and all my good work up to this point was unfolding. It was very frustrating...I was really pissed with myself. What was worse was this was were all the big crowds were and I hated for not running stronger in front of them..:( They were so great with there support. Not far from the 25 mile marker I decided I had to do something so I leaned against a wall and stretched my right leg really hard to try and clear it...and guess what? It worked..:)

I began running and started to pick up pace as I moved into the final mile. I pushed hard in that final mile and managed to get home under 3:55. If only I had stretched earlier when I first got that cramp..:ybatty:

But that said...I am very happy with the outcome and am already looking a head to next year and that elusive sub 3:50 target..:)
Thanks..

Well done Del, great time. Keep up the good work. Hope the weather held up and not too much rain.
