I've recently found out that I am pregnant. I don't have Crohns disease, but my boyfriend does. I'm worried about the chance that our baby could end up with Crohns disease also. Does anyone know the statistics? And is there anything I can do for my child, both during pregnancy and afterward, that could lower its chances of getting Crohns?

Hi there.

First off, congratulations on your pregnancy! From everything that I have read and researched, there can be a genetic link to developing crohns disease, though some get it and there is No family history of the disease. One of my best girlfriends, her husband has ulcertive colitis. Well his mom has Crohns so this was likely handed down in the genes. Not sure if there is a way to know if your child will develop it or not. Also my primary care doctor, well her sister has crohns, but she does not. It all depends I guess. I mean your baby will have your genes as well as your hubby's.

I mean as far as preventing it, I guess one thing you should do , is breast feed the baby. This is very important health wise for your baby. Also eating healthy( organic) and food without preservatives can really be helpful for your child in general when he/she starts eating solids. I think that is very important. I mean they really do not know what causes crohns. Some is obviously genetically linked, but there are also a lot of cases where there is no family history. Food my play a role. I mean our food is loaded with preservatives and junk. Eating healthy while pregnant also will help set up a healthy start. Try and avoid processed foods and try and stay organic as much as you can.

Good luck and try not to worry to much.. Oh, I also am from Chicago IL!!

Hello I found this information on the national association for crohns and colitis uk I find they have a lot of useful information sheets.

What are the chances of my child having IBD?
Parents with IBD are slightly more likely to have a child who develops IBD. If one parent has IBD, the risk of a child developing IBD is about 2% for Ulcerative Colitis and 5% for Crohn’s Disease, although it may be higher in some population groups. That is, for every 100 people with UC, about 2 of their children might be expected to develop IBD at some time in their lives. For every 100 people with Crohn’s, about 5 of their children might be expected to develop IBD. If both parents have IBD, the risk can rise to 35%. However, we still cannot predict exactly how IBD is passed on. Even with genetic predisposition, other additional factors are needed to trigger IBD.

So from this it seems the statistics are very low but I would like to add neither of my parents and no one in my family have crohns disease but I still have it. I must just have the right combination of genes for me to get the disease so it can happen to anyone.
Wishing you all the best x

Thanks KayleighMeek! Those statistics are very reassuring to hear!

I haven't had chance to fully research this topic yet, but from our anecdotal evidence, it would seem diet can be a factor since my hubby was first diagnosed when he was in college, stressed, and not eating the best. While it's suspected that his father and grandfather might have had "troubled stomachs", no one else in his rather large extended family (50+) have any IBDs.

Congratulations on your baby, LookingForAdvice!
