Hi all,

I was diagnosed with Crohns about a month and a half ago. I was started on Imuran about 3 weeks ago and the past week i have been getting terrible nausea. I havent been able to eat properly most days. I have had a constant headache for the past week. Is there anything that you have tried that helps with the nausea?

Thanks
Chloe :)

I had a lesser problem with the nausea, as mine was usually only in the morning. I did have the headache and a lot of joint pains. And fatigue. I kept at it, just plugging ahead each day, and eventually it did pass. I'm now 3 1/2 months into Imuran and don't have the nausea or headache anymore.

You can try taking the med at night (to sleep through the side effects), split the dose throughout the day, or start at a lower dose and work your way back up. Whichever way you try, always eat a substantial meal with it- a slice of toast won't cut it- once I switched my breakfast to a large portion of cereal the nausea stopped, after 2 weeks.

I split the dose morning and afternoon and I do not get nausea. I did on the methotrexate and took domperidone for that. I also have a big bowl of homemade cereal and yoghurt for breakfast with my pills

Definitely take it at night! Your body should adjust in time. I felt sp blah the first month or so. I have now been on it for 15 months (in remission).

I also had a lot of problems with nausea.

As others have mentioned, splitting the dose helped a lot.

I used the natural remedy ginger to help relieve the nausea when it was bad. I drank ginger ale and also made some potent ginger snap cookies that I kept in the freezer.

My GI also mentioned that I could try 6MP if the nausea doesn't improve. I guess some people get nausea from one but not the other.

Hi there, I take my dosage of imuran in the evening with a little food. I get the headaches, fatigue and joint pain too but I noticed it wasn't as bad if I took it at night. Hope it gets better for you

I have started to take it in the night time
But they have also doubled my dose and its makin me extremely sick. I am going to try something else instead of imuran. Possibly biologics. Has anyone tried them?

I absolutely had the same problem when I started Imuran. I would eat something and then immediately have nausea. My doctor prescribed me omerprazole thinking I might have had a stomach acid issue separate from my Crohns. I felt better and haven't had a problem since (and thats all Crohns treatment is, is finding the right cocktail of drugs that works for you! lol). Talk to your doctor about going on some kind of stomach acid medication like prilosec. I went the prescription route since my insurance would pay for it. Hope this helps!
