My life is officially over. OK, not officially, but this still really sucks.

Every morning, when I get to work, I fix myself a cup of hot chocolate...I can't have coffee anymore, so I drink hot chocolate instead. Well...I've been running for the bathroom every morning, i just thought it was a coincidence, but according to my GI, chocolate (and hot chocolate) contains caffeine...great. so I stopped eating chocolate and having hot chocolate for my morning drink...and voila!! no more morning D...great. Not so great...I am an AVID chocolate lover. This is day 3 of no chocolate, and someone's head is gonna roll.

Pondering out loud here Daisy....

Alot of hot chocolates have either sorbitol or aspartamine added to them - have a look at the one you are drinking and see if it has either...

My reason for this is both cause diahorrea!

Try some gluten/dairy free chocolate and see how you get on too there are some really nice brands out there that would mean you may not have to go totally chocolate free.

I know he said caffeine but it may not be that....

The biggest culprits are sorbitol and aspartamine as I said earlier and things like other artificial sweetners...

Hope my ponderings help and you get some results to the good!!

Interesting...thanks Jan, I'll look into it, and see...I didn't really think the caffeine content in chocolate was that high? I'm going to do an experiment with the sorbitol and aspartamine...we will see how it goes...

the caffeine content is usually negligible but it can depend on how sensitive you are, it's typically just a few mg's per serving... but sugar alcohols can have a laxative effect, like sorbitol, xylitol, isomalt and a lot of others that end in "-ol", like Jan says.

What about decaf coffee with a little bit of chocolate flavoring?
And if you need it sweeter, stevia is a natural no calorie sweetener that doesn't cause D. I haven't used it for coffee so I don't know about the taste - just for Kool-aid.
I would never give up chocolate - even if they had to take off a finger or two.

Agreed. Since I've gotten older I've started liking chocolate A LOT more than I ever did as a child.

I eat chocolate chips alone a lot. Mmmm... we buy the huge like 8 dollar bag of chocolate chips so we can munch and still have enough for 2 batches of cookies.

Do you make your hot chocolate with milk? I can't drink milk, but am ok with chocolate and coffee.

Actually chocolate that is at least 70% cocoa is a good anti inflammatory food. search for a high quality cocoa chocolate and see if you can work with it to get your fix

I was going to say the thing as theone. Go to your local health food store or do a little research at William and Sanoma, or Godiva, or someplace like that. one way you can make your hot chocolate is to shave the chocolate and then cut it up very finely and add to your warm milk or soy milk. You would be amazed at what you could find at what it helps with as far as your body goes.

I use just water with it...I can't stomach a whole glass of milk anymore, sadly. I've tried looking at the ingredients, and wouldn't you know it, sorbitol is in there!! I think maybe Ill check around and look for products that dont have it...strangely enough, white chocolate works...and dark chocolate works...just not milk chocolate. poo. Thats my fave. oh well...dark will give me my fix, and life will go on. haha.

Daisy -
My mom gets me gourmet hot chocolate packets every year for Christmas. They don't have any sorbitol in them and they are really yummy. They have all different flavors like gingerbread, hazlenut, raspberry, mint, Irish cream, butter rum (all with chocolate). And they are really rich - not milky, but darkish.
Maybe you could just use 1/2 a pack each morning. They are sweet enough where you wouldn't need the whole thing to make a full cup taste good.
The brand is Cocoa Amore. She gets them at the little stands at the mall in December, but you might be able to find it online.
Also - General Foods makes a decaf capuccino packet that tastes really good. I find that right at the grocery store.

Daisy-
I found butterscotch flavored hot chocolate at the store yesterday. And get THIS one - graham cracker flavor! I tried it already!!! Land O' Lakes brand (odd. Like buttah??) So anyways - I thought of you when I saw them.
What have you been drinking??

Pepperint tea :( And tim hortons decaf coffee...still can't kick the timmies habit...but I am ok now with no hot chocolate...at least until I can find one that tastes semi-normal that isn't $50 a box!! haha. I'm still on the hunt...mostly nutrition stores.

Another thing I cannot find...seedless strawberry or raspberry jam!! GAH!

We males invented you women, Pen. The structural ideology in place inhibits you to live without the male species. Without us, you would have nobody to place blame on for life's problems, and would turn on each other, resulting in the inevitable extinction of the human race at no more than a 28 day lag. You need us for humanity to go on, see the genius at work?

(all joking of course....)

Im lactose intolerant... and being mixed up with crohn's makes my matters worse.... when I read the title I thought I saw someone else with my problem.

If I eat dairy.... its not fun.
