Not eating equals a lot of gas?

I haven't been feeling the best lately. Lots of nausea, lack of appetite, and then when I get hungry I feel nauseous when I eat. :( I've noticed more gas since I've been eating less. Not just a little, but a lot. It seems like (I noticed this before, when I would first eat breakfast) that shortly after eating something, if it has been more than a few hours since I last ate, or it was a small meal, I get a ton of gas shortly after eating.

It doesn't make any sense why this would happen. I've not changed what I'm eating, either. Just less quantity, and less frequently. Anyone else ever experienced this?

Definitely yes. I'm not exactly sure why but Elizabeth Rayson writes in her book Living Well With an Ostomy, ". . . Eat regularly--if you skip meals, your digestive system produces enzymes even though there is nothing to digest. This leads to more gas.". p 87 She goes on to write that food that isnt fully broken down or stuck in an obstruction will cause gas as well.

I wonder if the nausea you are feeling is from some activity in your intestine (inflammation, obstruction, stricture) that is preventing food from moving---that's what happens to me bc I have some tethering in my jejunum so it hurts for food to get by. You may have gas both from slow moving food and from lack of eating. Or you might have nausea from missing some nutrients from not eating or inflammation.

Have you talked with your doc about the nausea? Might be a good idea.

Finally, even now with 10+ extra pounds on me, I'll get gas if I don't eat. I keep granola bars and crackers in my purse and tons of snacks in my office.

Keep us updated.

That's very good to know! Now I know why they recommended eating several small meals throughout the day after surgery! :)

For the nausea, I'm going to make an appointment to see my GI. Hopefully I can get in this coming week. I recently had a scope through the stoma and upper scope, then a separate occasion scope through the rectum (fun story there haha) and the upper scope I believe showed some gastritis. I believe I was still on steroids (probably 15 mg daily or less, in the tapering process) so things might look a little worse now.

Hopefully she will have some good ideas. I miss eating, and will not miss all this gas! Haha
