Pain Pain Go Away...

Hey, I'm new to this forum, so I figured I'd tell you a bit about my history with crohn's... I've had symptoms since I was 3 years old, constantly in and out of hospitals for "tummy aches", but was never diagnosed.. Until I was 8 years old, had lost 60 pounds, and almost went into cardiac arrest. I was given a blood transfusion, had a colonoscopy and was finally diagnosed. I was then put on a plethora of drugs for the months following. I was fortunate enough to be in remission for 10 wonderful years! From age 8 to 18, I was perfectly symptom free and never had surgery.

This past 2 years, however, have been brutal. Now I am 20 years old, and I have been in and out of emergency every few months, been from doctor to doctor for MRI's, CT scans, colonoscopies, ultrasounds, X-rays... blah blah blah. I have been on and off of enticort, cipro, flagyl, prednisone, imuran and pentasa, but nothing has helped.

Recently, the pain has gotten much worse, and instead of lingering for an hour or so every day or two, it's just constant. Sometimes it's dull, sometimes it's sharp, but it's always there. Not to mention the joint pain! I was recently informed I have an abscess, as well as two fistulas, somewhere around my terminal ilium.

I'll be going into surgery in a month or so, but I really don't know how much longer I can stand this pain. The surgeon said I just had to wait it out until I can go in for surgery, and my specialist said that there's nothing he can do except give me a note if I have to miss work... Which is becoming much more frequent. I swear, some days it just hurts too much to get out of bed. let alone work 50 hours a week.

What I'd like to know, is if anyone else has constant pain? How do you manage it? Do your doctors shrug it off and tell you to just tough it out? Does anyone take pain medication? And lastly, if my doctor won't help me with the pain, would it be beneficial to just go to emergency??

So much to say.. I hope someone can help me out!

Hello Crohn2,
I feel your pain.
Pain is my constant companion also.Pain killers are not a good long term answer but I know we would all like something to take the pain away.
I use heating pads which help, also I sit at the computer and play mind games, any games and listen to music by Mozart and other great composers, music has healing qualities. I also try meditation .
I go to the the gym three times a week, it is a special remedial gym and I find mostly I can do the exercise program devised by a kinesiologist and there is one on one supervision.
Some days it is very hard with the pain but I literally force myself to go, even if I am unable to do the whole program. It usually makes me feel better and I also see people who are much worse off than me.
My GI said the pain from crohns never goes away!
There are others on this forum who do not agree with this and they find the pain does go away.
Mnie can vary in intensity but is always there.
I don't think I can be as bad as you though, no one has suggested surgery for me.
Feel better soon
Hugs and best wishes
Trysha

PS If the pain becomes too much then it would be wise to go to emergency and get some help.
