I am do to have another colonoscopy and i am terrified. The first one i had i was put out. I was sound asleep , and they did an endoscopy as well. This time, it is with a GI and i have already been told that this hospital doesnt put you under for them. And i am thinking that between the prep and then having the scope done its gonna hurt!!!!!

I hate having rectal exams it cuases discomfort and sometimes pain!!! i am usually sore after wards and very achy

I am planning on tell the GI that i need to be asleep for the scope. But what if they refuse? Can they refuse? can i refuse?

It is stressing me out.....and i dont even have the appt yet!!!!

Can anyone please help me? Does anyone have rectal fistulas and been through colonoscopies???

Can someone please ease my mind?????

Hi Ontariomom

I've never been "put out" for my colonoscopies (with biopsies), but I've been sedated and have not really felt pain. The exception was when my GI tried to push the scope through my strictures; it wasn't pain so much as it was 'uncomfortable.' Afterwards, I was not in pain or any discomfort.

I have had colonoscopies done with perianal abscesses, fistulas, recto-vaginal fistulas and internal fistulas with 'twilight' sedation.

I can understand that you're stressed out, but if your GI is meaning that they won't put you out, it likely means that they're going to give you a sedation where you have vague memories but no real sensory manifestation of pain.

My only other advice would be to take as many very warm baths as possible during your colonoscopy prep to provide some relief.

I'm not sure if I've eased your mind...just before my GI gives me the sedation, i always remind him to 'be generous' with the sedation.

Take care,

Kismet
