please help

hi my name is Chris..I am supposed to have surgury tomorrow to remove some of my colon b/c i had a fistula and absess. I was just wondering if anyone eles that has been laid up in the hospital had a low heart rate. They have me on a bunch of anti bi'sand pain killers and they keep telling me about my heart rate being in the 30's I know it isnt normal but when im home the rates at about 60...So i just dont understand i guess im just a lil confused and scared i know itsa weird topic but any words or opinions are greatly appriciated- Chris

I have no clue. I hope it's nothing serious. That low of a rate sounds dangerous. Good luck with your surgery tomorrow!

Are you on any meds that may be effecting your heart rate?
I don't recall my heart rate but mine was low too, I was known as a breath holder as a child and even though I grew out of that side of things, I still have an effect on my heart rate when I'm really stressed, they have checked it several times with different monitors because they thought it was faulty equipment, then they got used to it and decided to talk to me while taking measurements and the distraction seemed to work, I was subconsciously lowering it without knowing, a form of white coat syndrome i suppose.

Some pain killers, like Morphine derivatives, can slow your pulse rate. Are you a physically fit person?

My son experienced that when he was in hospital too, he also had a fistula and abscess and was on steroids, antibiotics and Morphine. The hospital policy was anyone with a pulse rate below 40 had to have an ECG and a referral to a cardiologist. This happened to him twice whilst he was there, well that they knew of any way as he wasn't on a monitor. The upshot was, we were told it was benign and it was due to him being a very fit young man.

Oh and his tended to occur first thing in the morning, when they were doing his 6am obs.
