Possible first crohn's flare-up post-diagnosis while traveling

Hello! I haven't been on this site in almost two years because, fortunately, after my first bout with Crohn's disease (which was awful) followed by successful treatment with Prednisone, I have been symptom-free and able to go off all maintenance meds. However, I left home three weeks ago to visit family three states away, and about 10 days ago I came down with what I thought was a virus. However, now I'm wondering if it's actually a Crohn's flare-up since I've had it over a week and it's only getting worse. When I had my first and only flare two years ago, diarrhea, weight loss, and fever/fatigue were the main symptoms. This time, I have the constant low-grade fever, chills, light-headedness, severe fatigue, no appetite, and a CONSTANTLY rumbling tummy/intestines. This is the most annoying, because it happens all day and all night. Is it possible that I'm having a flare with zero diarrhea, or that I'm not having a flare but that the scar tissue from my previous flare-up has progressed to the point that food is slow moving through my intestines, and that back-up is causing the fever and lack of appetite and fatigue? I am 1500 miles from home, and due to drive back (by myself) this coming Saturday. Should I try to see a doctor out here, or do you think my GI doctor would prescribe meds by phone even though this might just be a nasty summer bug with flu-like symptoms? Thanks for any advice/experience you can offer!

I do think it would be a good idea to call/email your regular doctor if you could. Even if it did just turn out to be a bug it's better to be safe than sorry. But, I'm afraid that the symptoms do sound like a flare :( You could also mention about being away from home and ask if they might have someone closer to where you're visiting who you could see if need be. Good luck and take care

With your upcoming trip, perhaps call your doctor and ask if he can call in a short prescription of prednisone. This would make you feel better in time for your trip, and you could start weening down right after you get home.

These are great ideas! Thanks so much. I will call my GI doctor this morning. And even if this isn't Crohn's related, maybe the Prednisone will help with whatever is going on with me?! This morning I woke up with a lot of phlegm/mucus/sore throat, which is brand now, so now I'm back to wondering if this is a virus but I will sure call and talk it over with the dr. back in Iowa. Thanks again for your helpful responses!
