Hi Everyone - I'm new here after being diagnosed with Crohn's in November, following months of hospital stays for colitis, c-diff, and the birth of my third child. I am now on Remicade and just had my second infusion. I finished prednisone but still take Asacol and Imuran. My question is that my hair is falling out at an alarming rate and I'm not sure what could be causing it. I've been on the Asacol since June and the Imuran since July. I took prednisone from June until just last week. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks!

Hi Klkleo4,

I've noticed large amounts of hair loss at different times. I've been on Asacol for 4 years and just finished two separate 1 month doses of Prednisone. I think both of these 2 are the culprit. I want to blame it on the Prednisone, but I have times where I'm losing a lot of hair and have not taken the Prednisone for a couple of years...if you are worried maybe talk to the Doc. It could just be the Prednisone in your case. Good luck! My thoughts are with you.

Hi Klkleo4, I would mention it to your doctor if you are worried. I lost an alarming amount of hair after having each of my children (4) I had no idea how I wasn't bald. I mentioned it to my dr (I don't have IBD, and was not on any kind of meds) and he said it was normal after giving birth. BUT like I said I was not on meds. (((hugs)))

You may have a combination of factors happening:

Pregnancy and birth is certainly is one.

Medication: Quite a number of people report hair loss with the type meds used to treat IBD, particularly Imuran in the early stages of its use.

Where is your Crohn's located? If it is small bowel I wonder if you could have some nutritional deficiencies. Zinc immediately springs to mind with hair loss.

Then there is your general health. Your body has certainly been under a lot of stress. Harking back to the meds, when my son was flaring and quite ill he had significant hair loss and it changed colour, not sure if this was an illusion due to how thin it had become. I thought at the time it was the Imuran but when I looked back on it I wondered how much it was due to the actual stress his body was under and his poor physical state. I do believe this had as much to do with it as anything. It certainly rectified quite quickly following surgery and the remission it induced.

Good luck! I hope the Remicade has you soon feeling loads better and stops the hair loss.
