Please read if you have had surgery :)

Good Evening everyone,

I hope we are all in high spirits and having a good day :) Happy mothers day to all the mums on here to!!

I am going in for ileum rescetion surgery Wednesday morning - and at my pre op they told me I dont use any bowl prep at all and they didnt mention fasting either - this is my first and hopefully only op, so i have no idea if this is right? I have 6 preop high calorie driks to have within 24 hrs before.
i questioned the nurse but she said nope i dont need to take anything? what has you experiance been with this? xx

wow...that is surprising....
I am more shocked at the fact that they don't want you to stop eating at midnight the night before. For your own peace of mind, you might want to contact your GI doctor or clinical nurse to double check...
I have to do a cleanse and fast - they were very strict about only taking 2 of the many meds I am on and only with a sip of water the morning of...

Good luck on your resection.

Hi,

I hope all goes well for you on Wednesday. If they've told you to use the high calorie drinks and not to do any prep, then go with it. If anything needs doing, then I guess that they will deal with it once you are at the Hospital. Based on past experience, it's usual to be nil by mouth from midnight prior to the operation. It all depends when your surgery is due to be carried out, but you may be allowed sips of water up to 6:00 AM. If you've got any doubts, then there is probably a number on the pre-op assessment paperwork that you can call for clarification.

Thanks for the quick response - i was suprised too and asked her to double check and who ever it was on the over line when she called to check agreeed too.
I should of made it clear that i cant eat after midnight but then my op is only 8am next day.
Just seeing if anyone else has been to surgery without bowl prep - it makes me feel nervous NOT doing it before hand.
I may call my GI nurse tomorrow to see what she says :)

Shocking as I have had 2 resections and the bowels were to be 100% cleared. I would check too, just to be on the safe side. Hope all goes well and wish you a speedy recovery!!
