I know they're illegal and bad, but there will often be the temptation of doing them. Buy, as a Crohn's sufferer, the consequences of drugs can differ from what they would be to a normal person.

Just to tell you a little about me - I'm 15 years old, diagnosed when I was 11. Had a comeback a few months ago but I'm perfectly fine now. On 125mg of azathioprime and 3000mg of pentasa a day, plus I have an infliximab treatment every six weeks.

Are there any recreational drugs that will be specifically good or bad for me? I hear that MDMA is bad for Crohn's sufferers. I also read somewhere that weed Is used for treating Crohn's and LSD is good for treating and even curing Crohn's. But I don't know anything for sure. Can anyone tell me anything more?

There is no cure for Crohn's. I've mainly read research done on marijuana (even research for that is hard to come by though because of the legalities of the drug here in the US). Marijuana can help with pain and your appetite but as far as I'm aware its not going to do anything for the disease itself. I've heard of other drugs used as well but again, they may help with symptoms but not with the disease itself. Be careful what you put in your body beyond the medication you're already taking to stay alive because you're still young and your body and brain are still growing.

Welcome to the forum :)

Nobody here is going to recommend anyone do any recreational drugs. We're interested in the medicinal value of various drugs. If they can't be utilized for medicinal purposes, it does not fall within the scope of this forum.

I haven't heard that LSD has any benefits for Crohn's patients and that someone is suggesting it might be a cure makes me even more suspect. Some people have had success with medical marijuana, though I don't know what medicinal marijuana laws are in the UK, especially for a minor.

The mature thing to do is discuss how you feel with your family and health practitioners. Together, find the treatment options that are best for you, as everyone is different.

All my best to you :)

Thank you Crabby. I didn't really believe it when it said it cured Crohn's. It was far too good to be true. But they do apparently help with the symptoms. LSD in particular is a very strong anti-inflammitary drug, which is why it has been known to 'cure' flare ups.

There's so little information out there though, I don't know if it's trustworthy.

Thank you David.

I think I'm almost definitely going to stick to natural drugs if anything, like weed and shrooms. But I was curious about researching other drugs, and I happened to stumble on those facts about LSD. I'm not planing to do it, its just important I know which drugs I must definitely stay away from, ones that are really bad when mixed with Crohn's medication.

Stay away from chems. There is a lot of research on pot, (a fair amount coming from the Uk) regarding the use of marijuana to treat as opposed to alleviate some of the symptoms. It ties in the CBD receptors lining the gut, very interesting stuff.

Pot is helpful, shrooms are neutral, except mushrooms do not digest at all, so while chemically they are fine if you have any narrowing or scar tissue build up they can lead to obstructions.

The only thing that LSD has been proven to help has been migraines. But in general, stay away from chems, and no nose candy.

I wouldnt do shrooms. Goodness, they give gut rot sometimes. Yuck!

(Just my experience from doing them in High School.)

Recreational drugs are a risk to your health, whether you have crohns or not. You never know what they are contaminated with.

Hey Nattikur,

Was going to make the same point as Lydia made... even if you 'think' something is safe and have heard that it can help with certain symptoms, do you really know how it's been prepared? Where it's coming from? And how many people have handled it, cut it, etc. before it gets to you?

Be careful and think hard about your risk / reward!

I know they're illegal and bad, but there will often be the temptation of doing them.

Aren't you strong enough to say, "No thanks."? You can avoid these temptations. I wouldn't want to mix any extra drugs with the power house drugs you're taking for Crohn's.

Crohn's is tough enough to live with. Don't add recreational drugs to it. Just don't.

If you're healthy enough, find recreation in the real world. Hike. Sports. Nature. And if you're not fit for physical stuff, let your mind recreate in books.

Choose something better and more meaningful to do with your time than these recreational drugs you're thinking about. It's a stupid thing to get involved in, even for healthy people.

Am I the only person thinking this kid is nuts?! (Sorry). You're 15 years old, this stuff should be the last thing on your mind. Marijuana itself isn't even "natural" anymore. There's so many chemicals people in them, and who's to say the dealer doesn't lace it with other stuff too. He's not your friend, he wants your money.

LSD, Mushrooms, seriously? You won't have to worry about your crohn's because you'll be addicted to drugs, and your crohn's will be the least of your worries. If your crohn's is bad, invest your money into proper treatment that can help you, instead of wanting to get high and telling people its okay because it helps your crohn's.

Sorry if I offended anyone, but I lost what I thought to be a good group of friends because they all got into drugs, stopped caring about school, and are now throwing their lives away. You might think it won't happen to you, but once your addicted, you have no say in the matter.

Now that I am no longer at work, I can explain fully. I'm going to say the standard drugs are bad, but I won't go into the spiel about how drugs will ruin your life and you should get outdoors and live life. You hear that everywhere. I've seen it destroy lives, and have lost family members

Okay I fully go in the medical aspects of why drugs are bad for someone with IBD.

Cocaine, Meth, Speed, and any type of amphetamine - So this generally increase give massive amounts of energy which causes you to to quickly deplete energy stores, and causes you to lose weight. In addition to to increased basal metabolic, you just don't eat. These drugs also put a major strain on your heart.

LSD - you don't sleep for 12 hours and you crash, this places massive fatigue and stress on the body, and seriously impairs judgement.

Ecstasy - This dehydrates you and the majority of deaths relatedto this drug is due to dehydration. You expel water and electrolytes but due to the nature of the drug you don't replenish. Dehydration is already an issue with IBD sufferers.

Shrooms- as stated earlier they don't digest. Unlike most things classified as vegetables, the structure of mushrooms comes from the protein keratin and not fibre. Keratin is the same substance that hair and mails are made from. In addition to in not digesting, shrooms are distributed in a dry format. This can cause two issues, aside from the inability to digest, because they are dried they can absorb excess liquid in the digestive tract and swell this is another thing that will lead to obstructions.

Marijuana - This is a viable treatment option and I fully endorse the use on both a medical and recreational level.

Oh cool, I'm actually from Essex, about 20 mins from Windsor. I moved here for school though, and the fact the economy in Windsor is terrible

I've had Crohn for more than 20 years and I have been prescribed all kind of drugs so far. I think some of them are "recreational" (I am being sarcastic)

See this:

1-I takes me lot of time get the prescription; endless funny visits to the doctor at the hospital.

2-Some of them are really hard to get (out of stock, not imported any more, etc.) And I really enjoy when the guy of the pharmacy know nothing about such drug and I have to teach.

3-Once I take the drug some funny side effects may arise.

Bwahahahahhahahah!

If you put it that way...I take many recreational drugs too!

Thanks for the great laugh.:ylol2:

Hi welcome

All I have to say is do not fall into the "drug life" PLEASE. It is all around, and for SOME people very tempting. You can say NO as someone else mentioned. I was once a therapist intern at a drug and alcohol inpatient unit. Some of the patients did have a medical condition and started their drug use. After came building up tolerance which then built up to adictions. It is not something to mess with. I know you said you probably would not but your key words were it is "tempting".

Crohns is a horrible enough condition that has us deal with more than enough distress. There is no need to add on more.

My brother and sister... let's say "dabbles" in this department. They both have been for years. Now, my sister is done with rehab and adjusting to a "normal" body again. She thinks she might have stomach issues, since that part of her coming down is not going away. My brother was half diagnosed after years of use. He has found that after his drug use, the days he doesn't keep getting worse.

I think this is because what they do has a side effect of constipation and slowing your insides down. So, when they just stop... things rush back to normal, and are harder to get under control once again.

I'd advise you to stay away. Seems addiction is prevelant in my long family history, and I use that as another reason to stay away. I'd hate to think that some high school "fun" would doom you even more than any dx could.

Best wishes

Don't be one of those kids that ruin it for everyone else by doing drugs, staying out late roaming town, causing trouble, etc. They all come hand in hand. You can't tell people at 15 years old your plan is to do drugs like LSD alone in your bedroom and expect anyone to believe that.

When I was 15, I think my main priority was riding my bike with friends to go get ice cream or food, and stuff like that. Kids grow up way too fast these days.

What gets me is that you've already decided that you are going to do them. Planning for your weakest is not how to live life. Plan to be your best. Plan to be your strongest. Knowing your options for when you give in is not the way to go. Sorry if I offend.

Well the fact is half these things aren't actually as dangerous as most people assume. In fact, it is known that weed is actually a lot safer than alcohol. And I feel I would rather try something, as long as it's not too dangerous, and enjoy all the pleasures this modern world offers us than grow old and live a boring and inexperienced life. Its the way I think and feel, and I know that a lot of people disagree but everyone lives differently. But thankfully my boyfriend is a lot more sensible than me and would never let me try something before researching it and checking that it's not too harmful, and in which ways he can prevent anything stupid or bad from happening.
So I know that there are huge social taboos when it comes to recreational drugs, but what I'm looking for are facts to help me make a well judged decision as to how true or false these taboos are. Unfortunately, Crohn's does have an impact on the effect of drugs, and therefore it's a lot harder for me to find the information I need. That's why I asked on here.
I'm sorry, I know you only mean well, but telling me that all recreational drugs stupid and bad without any evidence behind you won't put me off, because it is just largely a social taboo, in the same way abortion and homosexuality once was.

And I'm not planning to ruin my life. Its just my interest to experience as much as I can in this life, because you don't get another chance to live it.

I'm sorry, but this is why we are smarter than you. You're 15 years old. You're still a baby. I would put money on the fact that "all the cool kids are doing it". Do you even know the slightest thing about drugs at all? At 15, I don't even think they start teaching that in school. They just went through another season of Celebrity Rehab, where one person was addicted to marijuana, and it literally ruined her life. She was just like you, saying "its not that bad, it will never hurt me" and lost everything she had.

It just seems to me like you're trying to rebel. What would you do if you bought weed, then got really f@$*#d up because somebody laced it in another chemical or drug (yes it happens). Also, you seem very public about it, have you told your parents? Maybe they can get you some help, and maybe a hobby.

I thought it was kind of funny too what you said about your boyfriend wanting you to research these drugs first. That's like him saying its okay to jump off a bridge, as long as you find the right one. He's not helping you.

Sorry, I'm sure you probably think I'm an asshole, but were all just trying to help you. Were all older than you, we've been teenagers, and we know what its like.

And do your parents know about this?
Do you want to see them being prosecuted cos it'll be them, not you, cos you're a minor til you're 16?
Do you want a criminal record at 15?
Having a criminal record will prevent you getting a job, not even McDonalds will have you!
Do you want to go on a Young Offender's Programme at 15?
Do you want your DNA, fingerprints and photograph on an International system for 5 years?
If the answer to these is yes, then go ahead silly girl!
Get caught with anything on your person and the consequences are horrific!

There is a zero tolerance in this country over pot now, it's no longer a 'slap on the wrist'.
It isn't decriminalised anymore, it's upgraded again to class B.
I speak from experience, my son is 17 and was caught with pot and even I was checked up on on the system!
He will stay on their system for 5 years. They absolutely wiped the floor with him!

If you're gonna do this, then do it properly with the help from your GP and parents.
And as for taboo? There is NO taboo, it's illegal!
Don't think you're world wise yet, you've got a lot to learn!
And please give a moment's thought for your parents.

I always say, girls that do drugs and all these are just a huge turn off. Girls are smarter than that, or atleast they should be. Guys, were supposed to make stupid mistakes, its what we do lol.

Put yourself higher than that. Make your boyfriend want to treat you like the greatest thing that's ever happened to him. Not some shrivelled up girl that might not live to see 20 because she got addicted to drugs after doing some "extensive research"

I've tried marijuana once in my life. I'm sure peer pressure had something to do with it, but you know, to me it just didn't live up to what everyone hyped it up to be. Why would I want to swallow all this smoke, then go around making a fool of myself, and embarrassing myself in public? Sure at the time I probably had fun, but when it wore off I felt like a complete idiot for doing something so stupid

Drugs are bad. No offense, but it seems to me that you've got the idea that you want to do drugs, like so many teens do, and pass it off as "Crohn's treatment"...

Illegal drugs are illegal for (relatively) good reason. They aren't tested for Crohn's, and it would be a terrible idea to subject yourself to random chemicals in the hope that something "natural" would work.

Yes, my parents know. And weed? Not that addictive. I know you think in a stupid teenager going with the crowds but I'm not.
For one I'm not stupid. I would never kill myself, which is why I will never do MDMA, heroin, cocaine, or anything that has real terrible risks. LSD I was mainly just curious about. The only thing I do is weed. And I have researched it on millions of scientific sites, and checked it up. The dealers I have are friends, trustworthy. I have another friend who's going to start growing soon, an he's a best friend, so it'll be very clean. Its not actually that addictive. Even so, I don't do it enough to become addicted. I don't do it regularly, just every now and again.
Secondly, I'm not doing it because everyone else does. I honesty don't care what other people do. I do it for myself. Like I said, I want to take advantage of the world I live in.
I don't expect you to all agree with me or understand. I just want facts l, not opinions. I've heard it all before, and I'm not stupid. I know what you're saying and why you're saying it. But let me just tell you, if you've ever drunk alcohol before, then you've done worse than weed. The only thing that makes weed worse than alcohol is the fact it's against the law. In fact, I very rarely drink at all. I think it's horrible and stupid and makes you do far more stupid and idiotic things than weed does. It is also more addictive and just as bad for your body.

And weed? Not that addictive
I think you'll find this is up for debate.
Almost all addictive drugs stimulate a part of the brain - called the mesolymbic dopamine system - that acts as a reward pathway in the central nervous system. Receptors for the active ingredients in cannabis have been found in this system. Once stimulated, these receptors begin a cycle of reward that can lead people to use more of the drug. There's difficulty in controlling the amounts you use. There's a degree of tolerance developed so you need higher doses to have the same effect. And then you persist in using despite the fact it's causing you ill health or debt.

I've been there, done that! ^
It is addictive, it's just that the main thing that separates cannabis from heroin , alcohol or nicotine is that the physical withdrawal state is not normally as severe.
so there's a false sense of security that it's not addictive!

Hey,

I get what you're trying to do. And you're so right to research what will work for you under the circumstances that you deal with rather than just acting through denial of your situation. You are acting with more maturity that most 15 year olds who can just go out and experience whatever they'd like without the same consequences as you (although, keep in mind they may very well face consequences as well!). And, give YOURSELF some credit, your boyfriend may be supporting you, but it sounds like you're trying to be sensible here, at the end of the day, he's not going to 'let' you do anything, it'll be your decision to make.

So, although I am a mom now, long, long ago I was also a teen! LOL You've heard all the 'omg, horrible things will happen to you' :hallo3: stories from here, your parents, doctors, etc., so let's just get past that (altho they MAY not be wrong!)... I heard all those stories too as a teen but I also knew that many people can dabble in drugs, alcohol, etc. and will be absolutely fine, responsible, healthy, smart people years later. (We'll even leave out the Crohn's issue for now...) BUT, what I know now, that I didn't know at 15 is... what if you're NOT one of them? You're no different/better than anyone else. I learned that through my son's diagnosis - the 'oh, it can't happen to me/us' did happen to me/us! :frown:

There's no denying that drugs alter your consciousness, your decision-making abilities, etc. (otherwise, why take them, right?). So, what if you make a silly, dumb mistake? What if you buy something that is laced with some chemical that reacts with your body (with or without your current meds)? Your first joint (is that what they still call it?) of the night may be from the 'pure' stuff from your friend, but what about the second and third, when you're judgement isn't all there? What if you think you're in control of a situation and, in reality, you're not? Accidents happen, no one 'plans' an accident. What if you put yourself in a position where someone else can harm you? Everyone's your friend when they're partying with you, right? :mario2: Hey, they're just having a good time like you. But, unfortunately, not everyone is like you. Unfortunately, you'll just have to trust me here - this is something you learn as you get older. I'm sure you're much more aware of life's 'dangers' today than you were at 5years old, and you'll be more aware at 25 than you are now (and then you're just friggin' paranoid by the time you're my age! :shifty-t: ).

A little while back (just outside of Toronto), a 15 year old boy took his dad's car in the middle of the night, picked up a couple of friends and they went driving and partying. How horrible was that? Really, so he took his dad's car without permission... all he was doing was going to hang with friends and then take the car home before his dad woke up (I did that tons of times with a friend of mine - she took the car!). Okay, maybe something to be grounded for but not an 'OMG, go to jail for life' type of thing, right? He got stopped for some minor traffic infraction and showed the police officer a friend's license. The officer questioned him and the boy panicked and took off. Unfortunately, the officer got caught in the car and was dragged, the boy panicked some more and lost control of the car. The police officer was killed and the boy is now paralyzed from the neck down and facing manslaughter charges. Really, do you think he planned this? One really simple, bad judgment call has COMPLETELY ruined his life, the officer's family's life and has taken the officer's life. What if you make a decision to experience some drugs and it turns out to be a simple, bad judgment call?

This is what I meant when I asked you in my last post to consider the risk - reward. Do you really think that in years to come, that kid is going to say, 'yea, I'm in jail, I'm paralyzed but, hey, we had tons of laughs before it all happened!'?

You have your whole life to experiences things (I know, so very cliche... ) but, it is true. Realize that by choosing to experience drugs, you may be indirectly choosing to miss out on lots of experiences later.

You really want to be mature and smart about this... seriously talk to your doctor. Not your parents, not your boyfriend, not even us - other than your doctor, no one else can truly give you the medical insight that you need. And, once you have your doctor's opinion, be responsible and act accordingly. At the end of the day, you will either act responsibly as you say you are trying to do, or you will choose to ignore your doctor's opinion, make a bad judgment call and then just hope for the best. :confused2:

I feel for you, really. It sucks that you can't just be 15 years old like everyone else... That you can't afford to make the same mistakes that other teens make, BUT, hon, maybe these choices that you're being forced to make now may actually help you in the long run...:ghug:

Ah see I don't go partying. Whenever I do drugs it's in a controlled environment with a few close friends and we only ever do a little bit at a time, and I want to keep it that way. I'm not reckless and stupid, and I'm not really into the crazy party scene. At least not yet.

Nobody said you're stupid, you're just not knowledgable. (No offense). You're not supposed to be at your age.

Try this: Take everything you've ever read on google and divide it in half. That's how much of it is true.

A few things that raise concern for me. 1. You smoke weed. 2. You said you rarely drink, which means you do at times 3. YOU'RE ONLY 15 years old 4. Youre parents know about all of this. I'm 21, live on my own, take care of myself, live a few hours from my mom, and still if she found out I smoke weed, she would drive, just to beat the crap out of me.

What's your source for thinking weed isn't addictive? Its wrong. Marijuana is just as addictive as other drugs. Its cheap, and you get it almost anywhere. It gets to the point where people think they can react better, smarter, and calmer when high from marijuana, and with that, they need it. You might not be there yet, but if you continue, that's where you're headed.

I'm in school studying psychology, and focusing on addictions, and how it affects the brain, and the impact it has on a persons life. Just trust me with what I say. Don't believe everything you read on google.

Lastly, when you say (by the sounds of it) you have a lot of friends that, or are becoming drug dealers it raises a huge red flag that you're only concern is getting high. I don't think these dealers are growing pot to try and help with your crohns.

I'd rather you say it's a party/social thing than otherwise.

I just don't think anyone is attacking you here
More concerned really cos of your age.
Be a different story if you were older.
I was over 20 when I started smoking it, and did so for over 20 years, and without doubt it's a good painkiller. (dunno about the Crohn's tho)
But when you're only 15, that's what's worrying, your brain isn't fully developed yet and at this age there's a higher risk of psychosis.
It also worries me that your parents are condoning it

We can debate it back and forth whether or not marijuana is addictive or useful. I say let's table that for another discussion?

My parents took drugs before I was born, they took drugs after, and they may now. They were hippies. My parents brought me up to understand that drugs should not be used in developing bodies. It isn't debatable that drugs (any drugs! prescribed or not) will and do have effects on developing bodies so it's a question of whether or not the benefits are worth the risks.

In the case of recreational (not marijuana - counting this in medicinal, unless you're just using it to get high) drugs, the benefits are never worth the risk while you are still developing. In the case of medicinal drugs, I think it should be considered a lot more carefully than it tends to be these days. Your parents and your doctor(s) should be fully onboard with your medicine choices.

If you want to try LSD or E or something, wait til you're in you're mid-20s. Give your body a chance to finish growing without adding more stress to it.

We're surrounded by pollution. There's no question in my mind that people are affected pretty badly by that alone. Plus you're sick and don't want to do something to exacerbate that. It's not that long to wait if you're really curious. FWIW - shrooms, lsd, e - none of that "worked" for me anyway. It'll still be around when you're done growing.

A quick thing about marijuana - just the act of smoking it is bad for you because it releases benzenes and toulenes (I may have spelled that wrong) which are some of the baddies from smoking cigarettes too. If anyone is going to consider using marijuana medicinally I just want to suggest eating or using a vaporizer.

(disclaimer: Just because I gave info about MM doesn't mean I am advocating it's use, especially in a developing body.)

I have a few opinions I haven't been saying to avoid argument, but yes I agree with Astra. It baffles me that your parents know about this, yet don't seem to be stopping you from wanting to do this.

You're so young, I'm trying not to use big words because you probably don't even know what they mean yet! Lol. At the end of the day everyone knows you're going to try these drugs anyways, but you do need to know you're putting yourself at a high risk of brain damage because of your undeveloped brain right now.

I'm going to ask you some questions... there's no need to answer them here, the only person who needs to hear the answers is you.

If you have done lots of your own research, why were you asking the questions here? I think you know the research you have done (that came from reliable sources) was telling you that drugs were, unfortunately, just not something you should be doing.

In any case, you came here for, perhaps, additional research (ie., you didn't go to just 'one' site to research)... so, from here, pretty much everyone has told you that drugs are pretty much a 'no go'. I can't give you everyone's background here but, it sounds like some of these people are fairly knowledgeable about this stuff... including Kwalker who is actually studying addictions, etc. But, you're trying to deny what everyone's telling you. Are all of us really not getting your questions?

My post wasn't about 'partying', 'partying' was a very small part of the points I was trying to make. But, was 'partying' the easier point for you to deny? What about my other points?

Have you spoken with your doctor? We both know that she/he will be more knowledgeable about this than you or I will ever be from researching thru google. Yes, there may be a case for medicinal marijuana (and I don't know the UK laws regarding this), however, has your doctor agreed that this is the course of treatment you should take? If not, why not? If you haven't asked him, are you afraid of his answer? I doubt you are on every possible drug available for Crohn's, so if you're not, you're doctor is choosing the drugs that will treat you with the fewest side effects. Could medicinal pot not fall into this category? That the negatives of pot possibly far outweigh the benefits?

I think you know that drugs just aren't a smart choice for you and you are trying to justify your decision to continue doing them.

This is very minor compared to your situation but when i was 20 or so, I smoked and my doctor told me I was allergic to something or other and that I had to quit. I was so pissed off! I enjoyed smoking, it was cool and I looked 'good' doing it (LOL) and I thought 'wtf, why do I have to be allergic and have to quit and everyone else can just go on and enjoy their smokes!??' It really did upset me, it sounds stupid but I hated that I had that choice taken away from me. So, I understand it's not quite what you're dealing with but, I do 'get' some of your disappointment and frustration.

There's a saying that goes 'You're going to work hard; you'll either work hard now or work harder later'. I think you can apply that here... you can either work hard now and get your disease under control or work harder later dealing with a more severe form of Crohn's (plus whatever other consequences may come). No doubt, it'll be hard now for the next 2-3 years but it may be harder afterwards for the next 20-30 years!

Your call...

I was so pissed off! I enjoyed smoking, it was cool and I looked 'good' doing it (LOL)

Single handedly the number one reason teenagers smoke, drink, and do drugs. I won't lie, I drink. I'm old enough to drink legally though, and I don't go out to parties and get wasted. Ill have a beer or two when I go out for dinner sometimes, or family christmas and that, ill have a few with my family, but its always in a situation where I know I'm not responsible for getting home so I won't be driving, and let's face it, with your family its very unlikely to get to the point where you're falling over.

Honestly, once you're old enough legally to have these priviledges, its not even fun anymore. A lot of young people do parties, drink, and drugs because of the feeling they get when they think they're rebelling, and they get a rise out of it thinking they're getting away with it.

Just out of curiosity, what's the legal age in the UK? Where I am in Ontario, Canada, the legal age to buy ciggarettes is 18, drinking and gambling are 19.

As there is no basis for any other drug mentioned here to have a medicinal effect (for IBD) other than marijuana, I'm going to close this thread as this is not the place for the debate of recreational drug usage.

If anyone would like to discuss medical marijuana, you may do so within this thread or the medical marijuana forum. Please be sure to abide by the outlined rules if you do choose to take part.

Thank you.
