Any recommendations for antibiotics for a throat infection?

My husband has a really nasty throat infection, and now my throat is starting to bother me. I can tell it is the start of something not good. So, I will most likely be off to the doctor soon and need antibiotics. But, unfortunately, my general practicioner doesn’t know too much about Crohn’s (in my last visit he suggested I take Advil for a back ache, and I had to be the one to tell him NAIDS are a no-no) and I am afraid of what he’ll prescribe not knowing antibiotics can be tough on the system for those with IBD.

I wish I could think of the names that I've been on but I've been on so many meds, it's kinda hard to keep them straight. lol Pretty much any of them will upset your tummy. :(

for strep throat last year I was on one of the 'cillins'...forget which one...with no problems. My GP is also a rheumy doc and knows about remicade etc and had no problems prescribing .....

I'm just coming to the end of a course of Erythromycin for a throat infection (allergic to penicillin or they'd have used one of those) and I haven't noticed any problems :) x

Thanks, guys! I think I could have taken Erythromycin before come to think of it.

@ Amanda - Do you think a Z-pack could be too powerful?? I love the idea of being done with meds in 3 days, but I wonder if the strength will be too much for the gut.

I've always used it and love it. It hasn't been too much for me. Of course I haven't had it since I had my ileostomy reversal, so it could be a bit different for me now if I tried it.

I've taken the Z-pack many times and many other antibiotics as well and have never had an issue with any of them and none of my GI docs have ever said to stay away from any particular antibiotic in general. Some doctors just give antibiotics willy nilly so make sure you actually have an infection before you start taking them.

What Crabby said! Antibiotics seem to be handed out like candy lately even when there's no bacterial infection present. Case in point, my husband just had a kidney stone lasered out and a temporary stent put in to let the little bits of leftover kidney stone come out. He's getting the stent out on Friday, and he was told to take 3 daily doses of Cipro starting on Thursday. He doesn't even have an infection and they told him to take these antibiotics - this seems a little crazy to me! Maybe it's common procedure with kidney stones, but Cipro seems kind of strong especially since he doesn't actually have an infection...

Hi Jill - Hope you feel better soon! I've been okay with the "cillins" in the past, too. But the last few times I swore I had a sinus infection or strep throat - it turned out to be really bad post-nasal drip. For that I used Nasonex in the past and it helped a lot. I also use a netipot sometimes to help with postnasal drip.

PA has had a really bad Spring for allergies - hope it turns out to be nothing more than that!!

My GI, grasping at straws and hoping to avoid surgery, put me on Cipro. It didn't do a gosh darn thing, but it's an antibiotic that I've never had problems with.

I also have chronic UTIs, so I'm back on Cipro now for 7 days. It's one of the antibiotics that works really well for me and doesn't screw up the rest of my body. Good luck!

Thanks for all the responses! I actually don't feel too bad today. I thought for sure I'd wake up and have a really sore throat, but so far so good.

I did email my GI to get her opinion and her response was similar to many of yours - be sure you actually have an infection and your doctor doesn't give you antibiotics when they aren't really needed. However, she said if it was an infection and meds were needed, to have my doctor call her to discuss antibiotics that won't upset my system.

Thanks again guys!
