Anyoen on Salofalk? My GI switched me from Pentasa to Saloflak; but my Crohn's is in the terminal ileum, and Salofalk as I heard is supposed to break down in the colon? So how will it be better than Pentasa?

I'm on Salofalk, been on it for years... I don't know how exact the science of the 'buffering' compound is... and I think (to use a crude analogy) the use of any of the 5ASA drugs for treating this disease is akin to using depth charges to hunt for submarines without the benefit of sonar. It's a scattergun attack with little chance of truly being effective (for want of a better term). But, aside from changing the color of my urine, (it turned the same color as the pills, just to forewarn you, OK?), it really hasn't done me any harm, and I figure every once in a while it does hit a patch of inflammation. As to why your doc switched, could be any reason... from he thinks it will do some good TO the new Salofalk rep is really attractive. Only one who can answer that is the culprit, eer 'doc'

Hi Mazen,

neither Pentasa or Salofalk is approved for crohn's disease, and there is very little data for either in the treatment of crohn's disease, but it can do no harm and can only do good!

Salofalk is designed as a duodenal delivery system, i.e. it starts to deliver 5-ASA in the mid small intestine, and is at maximum delivery rate in the distal small bowel, so the science is good for mesalamine delivery to the terminal ileum.

I've recently been changed on to salofalk. My main crohns is in the colon, although it is in other places. I have a stricture in the colon and he thought maybe the other tablets weren't getting through..hence the granules ( was on mezavant) Still having pain but see doc next week..he wants to remove the stricture..me...i kinda like it where it is even is it does cause a few problems now and then!! Not noticed any other probs with salofalk though.

Contrary to the above, Salofalk is a recognised treatment of Crohn's (maybe not in the USA though?). According to two specialist doctors I have seen it is typically regarded as a preventative drug, i.e. more effective at preventing relapses than actually clearing them up. My current doctor also tells me that there is evidence that it helps reduce the incidence of bowel cancer and may be worth taking for that reason alone.

I take 3000mg a day in the form of 6 big tablets (3 morning, 3 night). Unfortunately I don't seem to have seen much benefit from them as I am currently as sick as I've ever been.

Oh, and I should add, I have Crohn's in the terminal ileum. Apparently Salofalk in an appropriate form will target that part of your system as well as the large intestine.

One of the issues with web info... is that it might be diamonds, or it may just be stones. I know (been on Salofalk for 3 years now) its approved in Canada for various forms of IBD... and GutScienceGal joined in Nov of this year and has only posted 1 item.. so.. what have we learned today class?

Consider the source of the info... then check it out.. then double check it
