So my insurance company thinks I have a good shot at getting disability. They sent me a letter and have called me to talk to me about getting the process started. Does anyone know the process of getting approved? Have any of you been approved right away? If so, how sick were you? Was it a long process? Any other tips ect

I have a friend who reviews files for disability. According to her experience, a general rule is that you'd be denied the first 2 times. Third time's a charm. Good luck.

Yeah my sister told me that I'll get denied the first 2 times. My mom told me the only time you get approved right away is if you are on dialsys(sp?)

Best I can recommend is to get a Disability Attorney. Also it is very important to have a doctor that can vouch for your inability to work. Be prepared to spend some out of pocket money to pay doctors offices/hospitals for copies of your records as your Attorney will probably not pay it for you. Other then that do not expect anything to happen quickly. Good Luck.

I applied and didn't get approved for a couple months then got a check for 600+ dollars then received 350 until i moved out of my parents. now i live off of 664 a month :/ thank god i never had to get an attorney. i was fairly sick when i got approved but am far more sick now.

I'm sure the whole "you'll get denied 2 times first" rule has some truth in it but don't let it stop you from applying. I put off applying for a while until this past April when I had my 6th surgery for a fistula in a year and a half. I was approved in August on my first application. In the time between applying and being approved I had another surgery and my GI and CRS believed I had nerve damage so I can began seeing a pain management specialist. Reading through threads on the forum I received some helpful tips that I think really helped. You really have to focus on what you can't do, how you feel at the worst, and I really think having your doctors on board helped. All of mine were extremely supportive and helpful. The amount I get monthly is actually quite disgusting. If I didn't live at home with my parents there would be no way I could live on what I get. I think it has to do with the fact that I haven't been able to have a full time job yet. My problems began right after I graduated college. I'm on Remicade for it and I think being on one of the highest treatment levels because nothing else worked helped too. Just don't let the possibility of being denied keep you from applying!

I applied for disability while I was still living with my parents. I was just 18 but prior to Crohn's disease had worked after school and weekends to pay my own bills. I was denied, not sure if it was because I was still living with my parents or what, but not too long after that I had surgery and recovered well, so I didn't pursue it a second time.

Now, as an working adult with Crohn's returning, I'm nervous about what this means for my family!

I was on SSD from age 13-20, but when I hit age 18 they made me go back through the process of re-applying and it's very hard to get approved as an adult especially if you're young. I have been appealing for two years now so I can have the health insurance while in college, but I decided to get a full-time job and I currently have one while reporting my wages to them and get around half of the normal check and I get to keep my insurance for now. If I didn't need the insurance I wouldn't be on it what so ever and I plan to get off soon.
