My two year old has UC and has had his second flare in six months. He starts aza tomorrow, just wondering if anyone has any advice of when is best first thing or before bed? I'm just concerned as he's not going to be great at telling me any adverse effects yet! And currently he is on sulfasalazine, metronidazole, prednisilone, lactobacillus, multivitamins, iron and calcium supplements ( he's dairy free :( )
Anyone have a preference or is it pot luck? X

Sending lots of support.
I cant remember when the GI had my daughter take it.
I hope it is the medication for your son. It works really well for some.

We tried it for a few months with no change and then went to Remicade.

No advice but just wanted to wish you luck! I hope the aza works well for your son! :ghug:

I believe we were told at night two hours away from food for absorption and to minimize nausea but that was a long time ago and it's a good idea to double check with your chemist. I hope it does the trick for him.

My son takes his azathioprine in the morning with a full breakfast. He has had no side effects from it. Good luck with the new med.

I was told same thing at killcolitis. Just before bed to minimize nausea. Our son did take it a time or two and didn't go straight to bed and never have any nausea tho. Good luck. Wishing him great results!

My son took it in the morning with full breakfast as well and hubby always take his in am also.
Good luck I hope it works wonders

Good luck starting the Aza. I give my son his meds about half an hour after food, so his tummy is full, but the food has gone down a bit. I've always given it after dinner so it's near bedtime.

DS just started Aza two weeks ago and based on advice from other on the Forum, he takes it just before bed to avoid potential nausea. So far, so good on side effects. A couple of minor complaints of joint pain, but it always went away within an hour or so. I always ask him before bed if anything hurt or felt funny during the day and then log it in my notebook.

I thought I read that if you're on Aza, you shouldn't be on sulfasalazine? The sulfa makes the Aza less effective or something? Or maybe it was the 5ASA that needs to be discontinued? Sorry, can't remember. You might want to just double check with your doctor.

Good luck! I hope this is your son's "miracle drug".
