Hi guys,
I'm a newbie 😊 hello and nice to meet you all.

Can any of you clarify what you can and can't drink when on Modulen IBD diet.
I know I can have clear fluids and lemonade counts in that.
If I can have clear broth then can I drink Diet Coke ? Im a bit of a Diet Coke addict and am really worried about caffeine withdrawal, as well as the fact that. I Would really miss it...
Any ideas?
Also conflicting advise on which sweets I can and can't have...

Any advise would be really helpful and so welcome.

All this has been organised between my consultant and GP so ive not seen a dietician.
I'm on Modulen for the foreseeable future until I have an ileostomy in the next few months, after I've come off my steriods completely.

Thank you
Jo💜

I really know much about Module buy you asked about Diet Coke and said you were supposed to be on clear liquids. Diet Coke is not a clear liquid. I,personslly, had to give up caffeine because it aggravated my Crohns.

I think you're okay with drinking Diet Coke. For medical purposes "clear liquids" doesn't mean colorless so much as it means liquids that leave no residue in the gut. For example tea or plain black coffee is usually allowed on a clear liquid diet but not coffee with cream. And if black coffee is allowed I'm thinking Diet Coke is probably okay too.

I'm assuming you are on modulen as an exclusive enteral nutrition therapy? Or possibly supplemental enteral nutrition?

If it's EEN then Imy not sure you should be having diet Pepsi. Most often with EEN you aren't allowed much beyond water, maybe broth, sometimes chewing gum (a piece a day or something) and hard candy.

I'm going to tag my little penguin Maya142 and Tesscorm as they have all had experience with it and are more familiar with the protocols.

The thing is formula only is hard work so you want to make sure you are following it correctly for it not to be a waste of treatment so might be best if you contact your GI about it.

When my son did EEN for six weeks, he was not allowed coke, diet coke, or any opaque drink. He was allowed 7-up, ginger ale, etc. He was allowed any type of broth (beef, chicken, veggie), clear candies such as gummy candies, Lifesavers (but not caramel, chocolate), jello (but not pudding), freezies/popsicles (but not chocolate or banana), gatorade, 'juices' that had no fibre or pulp (apple juice, Tang powder mix but not orange juice, etc. - personally, I'd avoid lemonade if you can see pulp).

One option to create a 'food' is you can mix broth with plain gelatin. I tried to make some hoping that I could put it in broth as a 'noodle', of course, it melted immediately when mixed with hot broth :ybatty:, however, if you ate it cold, it might be just close enough to noodles to give you some satisfaction.

To add some variety, I also heated up the broth with different spices (chicken with basil, beef with rosemary) but then be sure to strain out the spices before having the broth.

For the most part, my son had broth for lunch and one or two freezies and the same for dinner. We varied by the different spices and different 'containers' (ie bowl, mug, etc. - taste is the same but 'felt' different).

To try for a bit more variety, I also mixed apple juice with plain gelatin - my son didn't like it but he doesn't like jello anyway...

You can also make ice chips/slushie and add a bit of juice/gatorade for flavour.

I believe flavoured/herbal teas were allowed?? But not 100% sure.

But, to be safe, if I've mentioned anything not suggested by your GI, I would run it by your GI and/or dietitian.

Thank you all for your help 😊
It's so difficult with no diatician to give me advise. I've really appreciated what you've said.
All I was told is not to eat anything...the rest I've learnt from the Internet.

Thank you
XXXX 💜

Ds is currently EEN again
When he was in the hospital it was clears only due to possible obstruction
Once that was ruled out
Then formula only plus pedialyte
Nothing else
It's been 6weeks so far

If your using EEN to heal crohns then the closer to EEN plus water the better
If it's just nutrition source then....
I would ask for permission from the Gi office
