Hi all -

What type of home remedies do you all suggest for abdominal pain?

Yesterday I had abdominal pain that built up as the day progressed. I ate yogurt and honey, tea, a small cup of soup and nothing else because I was afraid my stomach would not be able to handle it.

By the late afternoon my stomach felt tight and I was burping a lot. When I pressed down on my belly it hurt and I ended up throwing up. I was exhausted.

I laid down in bed with a heating pad and drank some peppermint tea. After 9+ hours of sleep I am feeling better, although I am still having some slight stomach cramps and feel a bit groggy.

Any suggestions for over the counter or home remedies I can do (or should do next time) to help with the abdominal pain.

If my pain continues or intensifies I will of course I will call my GI!

Hi Jane it would help to know what country you are in, I am assuming US because we all have different things in other countries, what we have you may not.

When my stomach hurts I like a hot water bottle or microwave thingy- it gets much hotter than a heating pad! I also like to lie on my left side, with my knees drawn up, and massage my tummy in circles. If it's really bad I take paracetamol (acetominophen) and codeine.

Hiya Jane

A hot water bottle is good plus codeine phoshate if it's really bad.
But keep your eye on that vomiting, if it continues, phone your gastro
I ignored my vomiting last year, then I was in hospital blocked and with an infection.
Watch your temp too.

As per country, we have otc Tylenol #1 with codeine, but you have to ask for it. We also have muscle relaxants which help, and antispasmotics that you guys all have to have a dx for it. We also have Gravol for antinauseants, but make you drowsy.

Ibuprofen is to be omitted as much as possible, makes the gut worse. Asprin based does too. But the suggestion of a warm bath is correct, makes it work better and coffee (caffeine) makes it work too. Some cases grapefruit juice can intensify it as well but may not be a great idea. I use heating pads too. If this gets worse, please see a doctor for pain meds and find out why you are in so much pain. Hang in there.

Lots of people find ginger tea or real ginger to be very settling to the stomach.

Hot water bottles are a great, and often underused, therapy for many ailments! I love mine!

Yes, ginger! I boil a bit of ginger and fennel seeds in water and make tea from it, or just drink it as a hot drink.

I also chew on fennel seeds as a way to try to settle it.

And take Tylenol when I can't get my stomach pain to settle in other ways.
