I have to re-open this discussion because I did a search for the key words and could only find discussions about this from 2012 and before. The fact that there are so many other posts about the sulphur/egg burps tells me there has got to be some connection with UC/Crohn's and these burps. I might be crazy but I have to see what others have to say about it now in 2014. :)

I'm not sure what starts it, it could be eating too much or eating something specific but I end up with sulphur/egg burps and then shortly after bloating that is extremely painful and diarrhea for days. I cannot eat because the problem will persist until absolutely everything is out of my body at which point it stops. I have been to the ER multiple times with severe bloating and pain.

There's got to be some connection to my Crohn's! I cannot believe that this is something else. I saw other people who posted were being diagnosed with H.Pylori but I've recently had an Endoscopy that came back with just inflammation and ulcers...no bacterias....no celiac

Also, since being on Prednisone I have not had a flare like this and I know this is normal because my doctor told me it was unlikely I would flare at all during Prednisone.

I am worried that once I'm all tapered down from Prednisone and tapered up onto Imuran that these burps will haunt me again and start a flare!

Any thoughts, experiences and advice are very welcome!!

Kate

The rotten egg burps come from release of hydrogen sulfide- which is mostly a product of protein digestion. Usually this doesn't happen because things move right through nicely, however many things can cause these burps.

1) Most important, but certainly not the most common cause- bowel obstruction. Since nothing is going out south, the air with the HS come up north.

2) Way too much protein intake

3) bacterial overgrowth

4) meds

5) very bad GERD, especially in the context of gastroparesis.

6) pregnancy

Probably many more causes, but these are the ones that come to mind.

In my case, it was a stricture. Surgery eliminated the stricture and the nasty burps.

As mentioned already, their are probably several possibilities.

Same thing here, my bloating and sulfur burbs were also due to strictures and the built up of bacteria and gases before those.

I too would vote for the stricture, especially given the other symptoms you mention. I too am an Ontario resident, so I know what the hospital situation is like. The ER isn't going to keep you unless you are really obstructing. You may have to push your GI (if you have one) to get some testing done here. It sounds like your condition warrants it.
