I was just wondering if anyone has had an operation or knows of one where they remove the bowel from the illeum to the transverse colon. If so do you need a poo bag? And how long was you in hospital? Any other details would be swell, as i am undergoing such operation in february

thanks

Hi,

I'm a little surprised that this aspect has not been discussed with you by the doctor. I'm no expert but for what it is worth from your brief description of the op that has to take place, you probably will not need a "poo bag" I think that they will just join up the two "ends". I cannot say for sure.

Best wishes,

Jim

I have actually had this operation. I had about a foot of small intestine removed at the illeum point and a small part of my transeverse colon removed - a right hemicolectomy. In answer to your question it all depends on your situation. I was told I would probably need a stoma bag as I had anal fistulas and I needed to rest my colon and rectum but I am sure its not always needed. I was in hospital with people who had had basically the same surgery abdominally as me and they didn't have stoma bags so it may be that you don't have to have one. You really need to discuss this with your surgeon. It may be that they will say you may need one but they will discover whether you need one or not when they do the surgery. If however you do need one then don't be put off, its not all bad. It takes a little time to get used to but I have had mine for 7 months now and hardly know its there most of the time now. The stoma point by the way hurts a lot less than the actual incision (if its a laparotomy) for the resection. If you have any more questions feel free to ask, thats what we are all here for.
