Hello again :) I'm having a laprascopic bowel resection done to remove a stricture on my terminal ileum on August 1st (Wednesday). I'm starting the clear liquid diet today and magnesium citrate (laxative/stool softener) tomorrow. :poo: I have a few questions, what's the deal with applesauce? It's technically a "soft" food, not really a liquid so i dunno. Jello's fine, right? And coffee. A good-sized cup of it usually gives me the runs so maybe that would help with the "clearin' it out". I've heard coffee is ok without milk or cream in it, I just want everyone's opinion. Also I know I'm gonna be in the hospital for like a week and they would take care of the food and diet while I'm there, and that you can't start drinking/eating until you fart. :stinks: But from experience, what's the pain like eating/drinking the first time after surgery? And what foods should I try to eat at home? Jello, applesauce, white rice, boiled chicken, is Ensure ok? Any low res suggestions? Thanks for the support, sorry I'm asking so many questions :D

Good questions!!! I'm having the same surgery on August 23rd and have been wondering myself about diet after surgery as well. I asked the surgeon's assistant about it at my first meeting and she said "Oh, after you can start solid foods you can have whatever!". That seems crazy to me. I plan to start out slow with things I know do ok with me now and then add in extras to see how I tolerate them.

Good luck with your surgery!!

The surgery got moved to Thursday morning so I did clear liquid for nothing yesterday! >:O At least I got to eat food for dinner tonight :p. I'm going in the hospital Wednesday evening for the prep, and My surgeon said today that I would be there 2-3 days instead of 5-7 like my GI said. Thanks for the advice, keep it coming :)

I'm sure its past useful but I'm pretty sure apple sauce is not in the clear liquids category. They say you should be able to read through it, though I'm told italian ice is considered clear liquids even though you can not see through it even when melted.

I just had that surgery done, was in the hospital 4 days after surgery (I had surgery tuesday and left saturday) but would have gone home 3 days except I stayed an extra day for remicade. The hospital I was at 3 days was the earliest they send people home.

as far as food goes, I was comfortable with food pretty quickly but ate small amounts at first. The first full day home I remember a meal was 1/2 cup mac and cheese and 1oz chicken. That quickly increased and now I'm eating vegetables again :)

I hope all goes well for you both!

I hope all goes well for you Angie, you are being very grown up and brave about it all. You'll be fine and eating all of your favourite foods again soon. Take care and keep us posted.:ysmile:

Hey :) I'm walking to the bathroom now, I got the foley and epidural out today. They're talking about taking out the ng tube tomorrow, I hope they do because my throat is killing me  No gas, but some grumbling. I have a three inch cut above my crotch, a small(about a centimeter) laprascope hole next to it and a laprascope hole in my belly button. I cant drink anything yet, I should be able to when I start getting gassy and the tube comes out. This sucks but I know I'll be able to eat again soon, thats what keeps ya goin :) :strawberry: :cookie: :cookie: :cookie: :cookie: :cookie: argh i want a cookie!

Great to hear! Just pace yourself if you go slow when adding liquids and solid food you will be back to eating whatever you want sooner. Glad to hear you are doing well keep us updated on your progress just take it slow.

Great to hear that you are on the road to recovery. Just take it slow and don't rush things and hopefully you will be back to eating all of your favourite foods soon. I think you are so brave and are coping with it all very well. Take care of yourself

I'm so glad! The ng tube is the worst!
Take it slow and be prepared to nap, I remember 2 weeks out I still needed a nap after a couple of hours on the couch playing video games

Glad to hear its going well! I hope you get the NG tube out soon and get on the road to drinking and eating. Good Luck!!!

Thanks for the support guys :) I got the ng tube out today (Yay!!) and took a shower this morning. I'm starting liquids in the morning and passing gas, no food until I poop tho :/ Oh well, I'm doing better everyday and having very little pain! I'll keep you guys updated on what's going on :)

So I started the clear liquid diet on Monday and pooped right away so I started eating solid food. I did fine with that and got discharged yesterday :D My stomach is a little sore but nothing too bad. I'm just glad to be home.
