Sorry lads, a bit of girl talk about to go on here...

So I've been diagnosed with Crohn's however there's something else not quite right with my body yet.
Since November 2008, my periods suddenly stopped and haven't resurfaced unless I've spent a month on the pill. Now, there's no chance I could be pregnant (if I was I would have had the baby by now) and I've been investigated by various gynos who've found nothing to establish a cause for the absense...could it be caused by my Crohns? Bearing in mind my periods stopped about a year before my first Crohns symptoms flared up.
My doctor has said this could be a possibility but not given me really anything else in terms of a yes or no, or why this could have happened apart from a brief comment of 'sometimes if your body is fighting something, it postpones other things' (such as my periods). I'm 18 years old and had periods pretty regularly from when I was about 15. I'm not too bothered about not having them (it spares me pain and moodiness) but I think in the long term I would like to know the cause....especially if it carries on! I might one day want to have children...

Just wondering if anybody's got any info or anything similar occurred to them? Would be nice to hear from you if you do :)

Hey - I like girl talk. I grew up with no father and with my mother and 2 older sisters.
I just have the obvious question - are you very thin (low body fat) from the Crohns? But, I guess the doc would have figured that out.

Rosheen, have your iron and B vitamins checked for one thing. And yes, low body weight will cause a temporary suspension of periods. As will surgery and major stress on the body.

Oh, and yes, I've not had a period since the end of November 2010. Had surgery 22nd Dec 2010.

But I had a fistula thru my fallopian tube which was discovered during surgery. I think my body at that point said "right...nuff already, we are no longer going to reproduce!!!" Fine with me at my age. But you should have a full hormone panel done as well as having all your vitamins checked, etc, etc. Because 18 is WAY too young to have this problem!

I went a year without my period. Not sure if it was due to meds or due to extreme change in diet at the time or what. But my gyno gave me something to start it again. Booo hisssss. I wish I had never done that because I ended up with my period the day after my surgery. Ugh!

Good luck - I agree with Misty that y ou should have a full panel done to see what's going on.

CDDad-apologies! I was a little underweight when I first went but the doctor said that it wasn't really enough to cause no periods. Since then I've put on more weight so if they return soon due to having more body fat I guess that will answer my question! But, as yet, no sign of them.

My iron levels are low which I am currently on Iron tablets twice a day for.
I think my last bloods showed both Iron and B vitamins were low, and I was also put on Folic Acid tablets to increase blood cell level (I think!)

Thankyou for all your help, I'm going to make an appointment with my doctor to discuss current medication so I'll mention this to him when i'm there.

It feels so good to have a place to go to ask people who know, rather than just speculating with friends!

Mine stopped for a year when I was 15, it could be from the lack of iron too (i have that as well)
