Hi,

Anyone here take Tumeric capsules? Any benefits? What dose is safe? Any side effects? Just looking for extra help with arthritis.
Thanks!

There are a number of discussions about tumeric on this site. If you use the "Search" button at the top left and enter tumeric, quite a few results will show up.

Although it's useful as capsules, tumeric seems to be more effective if used fresh or at least as powder in food. I include it in soups, stews, stir fries and curries, of course. Don't know about arthritis but my dog has it included in his naturopathic mixture for cancer.

The capsules are very expensive, though I have never used them. I simply mix a level teaspoon of powdered Turmeric found in the seasoning section of the supermarket into a glass of cold water and drink it on an empty stomach between breakfast and lunch. For me the results have been close to that of a miracle, much like the big gun meds, but without the nasty side effects.

Thanks Buford!
How long did it take for you to feel the effects of the Tumeric? Do you take anything else for sore joints?

We eat a lot of things with Tumeric and my husband cooks a lot of things with it. It's a good inflammatory item. I'm not sure about supplements, but using it in cooking seems to do well on me...

Thanks Buford!

I've been on it for about 6 months. Two weeks after I started taking it I noticed changes. A big improvement to my GI tract. The almost constant pain in my lower right side subsided, and the swelling in my abdomen is gone and my belt is several notches tighter now. Its now to the point that the pain on my right side is gone unless I do some strenuous work. It took longer for my arthritis to respond, but my right hip is better, and so is my neck and spine. Its helped my arthritis, but more so for my GI tract.

Interesting, what kind of effect have you seen?

I take curcumin extract in capsules. It's the active ingredient in turmeric but is 29x stronger, I don't take because it's stronger I find straight turmeric upset's me I have horrible inflamitory arthritis called ankylosing spondylitis that 10 percent of people with crohn's get.

Thanks for the info! Good to know! Do you find the curcumin helps your arthritis? And how long did it take for you to notice a difference? What else do you take for the arthritis?

Yes and no if eat something wrong I pay for it if I over do it I get pain.

But in saying that I'm off biologics ATM due to pending surgery, when I'm on biologics I feel better due to my inflammation being controlled.

I try and watch what I eat too much gluten and cabs also sugar and preservatives set it off so I really need to watch what I eat I don't eat dairy either it doesn't agree with me at all.

Just try and have a diet rich in omega three's and cut the stress that trigger my joint pain too.

Generally speaking if my insides are behaving I tend to have less joint and muscle pain. I do still get random back pain though. It seems the more I stick to a fruit and vegetable diet the better. If I eat pork I'm hurting inside and out, beef is almost as bad as well. I get traction for my back and also chiropractic care when needed. I also stretch regularly and use resistance bands as well as lift weights. Turmeric has taken me to another level though, far less issues with pain overall. :)

Ok, thank you for the info. I haven't been diagnosed with arthritis yet, I went to the family dr this morning and he is sending me for a ultrasound and X-ray of my knee. So I am going for those tests tomorrow and he will have the results tomorrow. My family dr doesn't seem to think its arthritis, but I'm pretty sure it is. Atleast he's doing some tests. I just went swimming and that feels good.

An update;
I noticed today after taking a shower that my feet are no longer full of cracks. For many years I suffered from cracked foot pads around the heel and on the front pad by my toes. The only thing that has changed has been taking Turmeric in powder form from the seasoning aisle for the past 5 months. My skin is better all over including my knees which used to be plagued by cracking too. If my skin has improved then probably my GI tract as well. Abdominal bloating is gone, and I can pull in my belt several notches as a result. My appetite has improved, but I must remain on my diet at all times.

I started taking ginger and ginger supplements one month ago and found benefits for my stomach. I'll start tumeric powder too.
Thanks Bufford for the good advice.

I added ginger to my supplements but it seems to interfere with my blood pressure as I am on Amlodipine Besylate for high blood pressure and 81 mg asprin for a thinner. I think the ginger is thinning my blood too much. I may try going off the asprin and try ginger again. I read that ginger helps the GI tract better absorb the Turmeric.

Interesting.
I read pepper could help absorb Turmeric too, but could upset GI tract. What's your opinion on it?

I tried the capsules as they were in the penny sale at Holland & Barrett one day. No improvement on symptoms, in fact they made me very 'burpy' [emoji23]

I believe it's best made at home into golden paste with black pepper and oil. An Indian friend of mine said that over there it's taken as a spoonful mixed in with some warm milk, but you have to down it in one as it doesn't taste very pleasant! I haven't got around to trying that one yet [emoji51]

Perhaps I have been getting the black pepper I need from adding it to my boiled egg I have for breakfast everyday. I tend to add a lot as I like spicing up my egg.
