Was released earlier from the hospital, got 18 inches of ileum/cecum removed. Doctors trying to discuss what med to be on now that I'm out...

How have you guys dealt with life after surgery? Any tips?

I have had two resections. Did you have it laproscopic? If you did your healing time will not be as long. Rest, take your meds. I was on Flagyl and cipro after both my resections but the new med post surgery is Flagyl and Imuran but I have reactions to Imuran. Hope you are healing well. Take it slow, don't be eager to eat, start out liquids and or ensure, then light foods, bland and easy to digest. Sometimes digestive enzymes help with heavier meals , since now you dont have the full capacity now to do it on its own. B12 subliminal ones, and Calcium and Vitamin D3 in proper amounts.

Drinking water helps too, slow, and no straw, causes bloating. Keep us updated and let us know how you are doing. Big hugs!

5 weeks out of surgery, after permanent ileostomy, rectum closed, and J pouch removed. Pain for 3 weeks, where I was unable to sit up. Just started the gym again (5 weeks) just attempting to use light weight and not use the abdominal muscles. Some days slight pain, but feeling so much better. Careful what you eat and know will not effect you in a negative way. Also suggest walking as much as you can, helps keeps the system moving.

Any questions let me know, after 8 surgeries sort of being a pro that I do not want to be.

Hope you do WELL in your recovery, keep you head up - in time you will feel better

go back to solid foods slowly. Way more slowly than they recommend.

And pay attention to what you add back into the diet. It takes three days for stuff to really show up sometimes so stick with safe foods for a few days between the new things.

What you eat may not cause Crohns but it sure as heck makes living with it a pita :poo:

Yeah I've found some foods definitely aggravate me however they didn't before, although as long as everything runs smoothly it's definitely worth the trade. Just take it easy though no over doing it, I found because I felt great that my was fitness was ok and didn't even consider it and ended up passing out in a pub... and there people just consider you've had too much ... not good!lol
I'm just on pentasa atm and it's been 4 months almost, hope everything goes good for you :)

I don't remember what life was like directly after my surgery, minus the complications I had a week after mine but I don't think you'll have that problem. All I know is that its been 11 years since mine and I do have symptoms off and on (diarrhea (common) and minor pain (not so common)) but nothing that sends me back to the hospital. My scope last year was also clear. Having a scope done every 2 years after surgery is a good idea. Generally I take Imodium for D and take Advil for pain (I've never had a problem with Advil but some people do) and live my life fairly normally. I hope you stay in remission. :D

Thanks for the responses guys. mr. semicolon306, i really feel for you, thats f****** awful. you're a stronger rebounder than lance armstrong in my book...

im dealing with terrible gas, probably because they inflated me like a balloon during the surgery. my goal is to fart successfully, because thats the best way to tell if the bowels are working again. the CO2 is travelin all around the body lookin for an exit and the bowels are asleep :(

im thinking of going the LDN route.... i am happy that you are still in remission crabby relish. i pray to god that I end up on the crohns free path that you have. have there been things you did after surgery that helped you to stay in remission? i know its been 11 years, but any life changing events or practices like diet suggestions would be welcomed.

i want to get out of this surgery newed, free of disease and able to live a normal life

Well sadly we'll never be free of the disease less there's a cure found. I was 17 when I had my surgery so I don't really recommend the lifestyle I had going on then. I was pretty much a party animal and did and ate whatever I wanted. For me, diet and stress haven't been huge factors in the onset and offset of the disease. Although, whenever I thought that something in particular was causing unneeded stress or made me sick when I ate it, I avoided it. Sadly this also included homework and projects for school causing me to drop many classes during college. In all honesty I think the severity of the disease is the main factor when it comes to being in remission cause no matter how you change your diet or lifestyle, if the disease is coming on strong, you'll still get sick all over again. But in general I'd still suggest avoiding the "party" lifestyle just to be on the safe side. ;)

Edit: I did have regular doctor visits after my surgery (saw the GI once a year for about 2 years then every other year) and had a scope done twice in 4 years afterwards and continued taking my medication (Asacol and 6MP). But I stopped taking the medication 2 years ago because my insurance stopped paying for it so my symptoms may return sooner than I'd like.
