Hi, new to the forum and hope this is the right place to ask...just looking for anyone's experiences in trying, successfully or otherwise, to gain weight following a flare-up. My own situation involved a recent flare up which necessitated an eight day stay in hospital. I had severe bleeding, inflammation and infection which was treated aggressively with antibiotics and the usual medication (imuran, asacolon, prednisolone, etc). I'm still recovering and off work at the moment. As a result I've lost over 1 stone (6kgs) in a very short space of time. This was my first major episode, I've had small flare ups but nothing like this. As a result, I'm watching what I eat and restricting myself to much smaller portions of food.
However, I am concerned about my weight. I'm a 6ft male, 33 years old and typically weigh about 13 stone. I'd like to maintain that weight and even increase it. I had been using the gym for weights and enjoyed doing so, but the recent flare up has curtailed this somewhat. I'm just wondering if anyone has used, say, protein shakes, whey protein, weight-gain supplements, etc to address this issue, and to what success? Any advice would be appreciated.

How well do you tolerate dairy? I have had huge success with weight training + special diet additions after my many flare ups. Also, how is your appetite? I have a lot of experience and a lot o advice to give, but it depends on what your situation.

What medications are you taking right now, what dose prednisone are you on and how long will you continue taking pred?

How many times a day are you going to the bathroom and is it more formed now or still the runs? Are you still seeing a lot of blood?

Thanks for the replies happy and kel.
Kel, I'm able to tolerate diary, no problems there. Appetite isn't great at the moment but normally I've a healthy one.
I'm currently on 150mg imuran, 1600mg Asacolon, and 5 x 5mg Prednisolone (reducing by one every five days so it's only short term). I'm due to see my consultant tomorrow so that may change.
Going to the toilet between 8 and 12 times a day, still the runs and blood is intermittent, sometimes very little and other times quite a lot.

Hello,

I am currently following a strength programme and am bulking in a calorie surplus after my most recent flare knocked me down to 135lbs (at 6ft1 I was just a skeleton). Whole milk and whey protein are great additions to put into your diet as they are an easy way to gain a lot of calories, I've been drinking about a litre of whole milk a day on top of my usual consumption and it's been a great tool in helping me gain some more mass. I have a long way to go but I am now 170lbs after a few months of keeping my diet in check combined with hard training

Good luck with your weight gain goals :)

Before you can gain weight you have to stop all your calories from shooting out your backside. Prednisone helps a lot with this, not sure why you're on such a light/short dose. If you can tolerate dairy I would consume as much as possible in addition to your regular meals. I've done as much as a gallon a day to make huge huge gains. I strongly recommend starting a probiotic supplement, this will help with your BM's by restoring all the good organisms in your gut the recent antibiotics wiped out. You can look around here for reviews many people have found different brands/strains that work for them. Personally I get the best results from primal defense (NOT the ultra one). In the past align had also helped me quite a bit and can be found in almost any store in the states. Many people swear by Jarrows probiotic formula. Read around, order 2 different ones that seem best and try em out.(money permitting) I'll post more on diet itself tomorrow when I can get on my computer. Talk to your doc about your weight concerns and maybe try to get longer prednisone dosage.

To reiterate, decreasing trips to the bathroom should be your first goal. That will set the stage for the kind of gains you are looking for. PS I have gained 30 lbs mostly muscle in one month before. The body is capable of extreme healing/change if you help it along.
