So, how do you know if you have an abcess or just a sore spot. My rectum area is very sore. I am using the suppositories right now, and I can feel a sore spot. WHen the stool hits that area--it hurts. I just started 6mp, last week. Does 6 mp help heal those things? Or could it just be the crohns making it sore. I am on 20 mg of pred and well...it still hurts...Mmmmm

So Sue, I can't imagine your suffering. You could have hemmies, polyps or an abcess. Most fevers accompany abcesses. 6mp is an antisuppressive so your body doesn't fight itself. I was told they could take weeks to start working. I would contact your doctor or GI to be on the safe side. Abcessess are not to be ignored. Keep us posted, don't wait to long ok? Hugs.

Sue,

That is how my anal abscess started. My GI doc thought it was a hemi.

I tried rx suppositories but they did nothing.

I discovered a "lump" beneath my tailbone months later and it then progressed and erupted causing a fistula.

Have a colon rectal doc take a look and hopefully (if the start of an abscess) something can be done before it becomes a problem.

Good Luck

K you guys...thanks! Mike, please tell me yours was resolved with antibiotics.... Jetta! you are always so kind...Thansk for the hugs!!! Try to keep my head screwed on straight but its hard to stay positive, when you keep getting sucker punched!! Sue

Hey Sue,

You need to be very careful with any potential abcesses... you don't want to have them develop into fistulae. I had a hard time with them over a couple of years.

And to show you that great minds think alike... I noticed something over the weekend on my bum which was sore and felt like a potential abcess (for the first time since I got rid of my fistulae two years ago). I was very worried about it but woke up this morning and it had receded. Things tend to get messy down there with Crohn's so hopefully it is nothing too serious.

Get it checked out properly but don't worry yourself too much in the meantime!

Sorry Sue.

I've been on Cipro/Flagyl since October. I had a seton loop put in when the abscess was drained and another little seton (suture thread) as well in the upper part of the tract.

I'll be starting Humira in 2 weeks and the docs are very confident that it will close the fistula.

However, I believe that if caught early, which may be in your case, the antibiotics, especially Flagyl might close it.

Please be carefull that your docs do not rx Cipro alone. I developed a C.diff infection from too much antibiotics, Cipro alone. I had too drop the Flagyl 1500mg per day because it was making me ill to no end. The C.diff infecton was fought off by Vancomycin.

Currently taking 750mg Flagyl and 1000mg Cipro with no problem.

I developed the fistula in Oct '09 and I am told by all it can be a long, long haul.

Good Luck

You guys are great...I just called my my gi office and left a message. I get worrying and lord knows what my mind can do....So, I hope that if it is an abcess...It is caught early enough. It is plenty sore. So, we shall see....I will keep you guys posted...Again, thanks for your advice.... :) Sue

Thanks you guys...I might pm you later...If thats okay...Sue

Great that you got a response so quick from the doc's office, so does that mean you are not on the antibiotic now? If not, then how long were you on it?

Hi Sue,
From someone who had dealt with fistula/abscess for longer than I care to remember, I agree with the other's adivce. Get it checked out. Also, I would ask your doc about cipro/flagyl. May not be the funnest drugs to take, but trust me, I have found that nothing works better for clearing up the inflammation and soreness that comes with an abscess. Good luck and let us know how it works out for you.

Jetta--I am on an antibiotic, but no the ones mentioned above. Its called xifaxan. I don't know whats going on down there. Its just so sore. But, I don't know. I need a break, like we all do! I am sick of worrying about my tuckus! I don't know if this is going to end. :( Call me frustrated! Sue

Hugs, Sue. I know exactly how you feel. That is exactly how the majority of my Crohn's disease rears it's ugly head. I hope you get things worked out.

I googled the Xifaxan and it is Rifixamin which isn't in Canada, and I was researching it because the VSL#3 probiotics and Rifixamin is supposed to be great for Crohns, new study. We never get the drugs the states have.. rotten FDA restrictions. How long have you been on it? Hope you get relief soon. That must really hurt.

Pen, I had a ruff day yesterday. I hope its just a blip. My toucus feels ok. I hope this med works....I am on 20 mg of pred I am supposed to taper this week...I think I am going to hold for one more week. S :(

Sore Rectum

Okay, I got scared today. I put the suppository in and went cross eyed:eek2: So, by 4pm I thought I should call the Dr again. They are going to think I''m nutso. But, it still hurts. After a week and a half on xifan (sp) 20 mg of prednisone, pentassa & 6mp---should there be some improvement. I think some one should look in my hooha---what do you guys think? I value you your opinion. Has anyone just had a sore rectum and no abcess or fistula show up? Mmmmm...I'm tired of thinking about my a*7.:depressed: :calmo:
