Abscesses

Thought I'd share something I found.

I had a terrible issue with recurring abscesses. Doctors said it was probably staph/MRSA. I would get them on my butt cheeks frequently, like every 3-8 months, I lost count of how many I've had I&Ded.

They don't believe them to be the result of fistulas.

Well I've also had them occur elsewhere, and am very prone to hair follicle infections.

Recently I had them develop in my arm pits, one in each. It was extremely painful, the one in the right was fluid filled and I had drained, the one in the left was solid and could not be drained. I ran two courses of bactrim to little avail, they were reduced temporarily but not stopped. First course was 10 days normal dose, second was 7 days at double dose.

I cut out ALL processed sugars from my diet, supplemented with vitamin C and echinacea and lo they went away.

If I consume excessive simple sugars they start to return. The one in my left arm was putting pressure on my tendons and I could feel my muscles tighten & pain up my bicep and forearm when it starts to grow. I had been eating too much candy at work and had to stop and the tightness went away again.

If any of you are experiencing issues with abscesses, or other skin infections as a result of your condition, I highly suggest a diet void of processed sugars.

It seems the following are safe:
-Complex carbs like rice
-Honey
-Sugar from fruit (I drink V8 splash and orange juice on the regular. Avoid anything with high fructose corn syrup or that doesn't say 'no sugar added')

I can't say with absolute certainty though, it may just be that there's less sugar in these than the candy I was eating.

I am not currently on any medications for Crohn's that would cause a reduced immune response or proneness to infections.

Thanks for sharing this and I'm really glad to hear that you are getting some relief from what must have been a very painful and worrying problem.
I haven't suffered from external abscesses, but when I first started to flare, sugar was one of my biggest triggers. I hope others with similar problems will give this a try. One way or another, cutting out a lot of sugar is not going to do anyone any harm.
